Title: FullFrame 85mm 1.8 equivalent for MF
Post by: MichaelEzra on August 29, 2020, 02:26:17 pm
I am contemplating the purchase of Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD for use on Nikon Z7 and D800e.
But, as I also have 645z, I am also curious, what is the closest equivalent for such lens for 645z.

I could not yet find any comparisons of that lens to medium format, so I'd appreciate any input. Thank you!

Thank you Jim. Looks like there is nothing quite similar for 645z. Tamron it is then:) With 1.8 the eye AF on Z7 should be quite handy.

So why not choose nikon own 85 mm 1.8 s ?
From my own experience and testsites it is a marvel.

Pentax 645 120mm f/4 macro? Yes, not as wide - an f/2 would be ideal, but it doesn't exist. The 120mm macro is a pretty amazingly sharp lens, plus it's vintage, so cheap relative to new lenses.

I do have 120 F4 and 150 2.8 for 645z and both are excellent lenses.
For Nikon, I wanted to get the F mount, so I could use it on Z7 and D800e. Had I only had Z7, 85mm S would be the absolute top choice. The only issue I see with that lens is cat's eye bokeh towards the corners (which likely was a compromise for containing the lens size and weight, that is consistently maintained in the Z system).

Zeiss 135/2 APO covers the sensor (same as Fuji, X1D, etc) and is well regarded on the GFX. The Zeiss 100/2 Macro might, but is infamous for colour fringing.
