Title: IPTC not transferring in PS File Info
Post by: benoit@benoitmalphettes.com on March 18, 2020, 11:17:30 pm
I just happened to check the © info in PS for a picture I "opened" from one of my C1 Sessions and none of the IPTC fields correctly entered in C1 are showing in PS.
Can anyone help?
Benoit

I am not seeing that myself but my workflow is likely different. I just tested with a .psd file I created with Affinity and I can see the IPTC fields I edited. Now I used Photomechanic to populate those originally and the .psd file was created by Affinity but when I open with Photoshop CS6 I see those fields fine. I am not sure there are settings that would influence that.

Question though when you created the .psd file initially did you use Edit With or a process recipe or the Export command?

Thanks for answering. I dug further and here is what I found:

-  I populated the IPTC fields -  after  -  I was done working on my files (Raw processing, PS cleaning etc)
-  C1 Preference settings are on Default for Metadata

Then If I use "Open With" from C1 - no - IPTC fields are transferred in PS
But if I use "Edit With" from C1 IPTC fields are transferred in C1 which create a new copy and then I can "Open With" this new copy from C1 and IPTC fields are properly transferred
Which means I have to populate © info etc before I use my files in PS.
Quite cumbersome and I don't recall experiencing that behavior before.

I used to use PM a few years ago when C1 was not too good with IPTC and I rarely use  the Export command

I am glad you found a happy path sorry it is not quite what you wanted. C1 does allow you to save it's metadata to a file with Image | Metadata sync (https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002544898-Metadata-in-XMP-files)

You might be able to use that to make sure that the PSD files get updated after you make changes in C1.

Can you add the IPTC to your raw files? Then it will transfer to Photoshop when you Edit With from C1.

Tom, yes IPTC fields transfer to PS if I enter them in the raw files before opening the raw file in PS (with "open with" command).
My problem is: if I populate the IPTC fields in the C1 files, raw, psd or tiff, after I am done, like when I am done with a session and move the files to my catalog, then they do not transfer in PS.
Ideally, I should be very disciplined and enter them right away at the raw/processing stage...

I think using the image | sync command should work. It is meant to take the metadata stores in the catalogue and writ it to the file.

Sync metadata in Capture 1 writes the information in a xmp file, even for a Tiff file. The issue is that, as far as I know, neither PS nor LR will read metadata from a xmp file for a Tiff or jpeg file.

Appartently the only way to have the metadata inside the Tiff file is to create / export the Tiff after the metadata has been included in C1, otherwise the information is in the catalogue only.

LR can definitely read metadata from xmp files. I figured PS could to but perhaps not.

I don't know about LR and it seems Francisco statement is right.
It is cumbersome to "open with" a tif finished and done with in PS to create a jpg version for the web and have to enter © info manually in PS for the web version. Of course C1 offers the same workflow but the sizing of the jpg file is not reliable.

Not for Tiff or JPG files. LR can read / write xmp files for raw images only.
