Title: Morning on Campo Imperatore, Abruzzo
Post by: Hans Kruse on March 10, 2020, 03:46:27 pm
With a view to the old castle at Rocca Calascio on the hills in the background. Abruzzo is a wonderful place with history and old villages and very nice landscapes. It's in the Appennine  mountain range on the level of Rome and only about 1.5 hours drive from Rome.

Beautiful shot Hans, good that you are not corona-locked in the Dolomites.

Is this area the one with the recent earthquakes?

Thanks Kers, we went through in late February from South of Italy by car and we went back some days earlier than planned since we were expecting the borders could be closed. So far no problem in my family.

The last big earth quake hitting Abruzzo was back in April 2009 with epicenter in l'Aquila and since then there were severe earth quakes in Umbria not so far north of Abruzzo. Norcia and Castelluccion were severely hit as well as some villages south towards Abruzzo. The last earth quakes in 2017 totally destroyed the hotel I had been using for 7 years for my workshops. See here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rigopiano_avalanche

I was fortunate to have one glorious visit to Castelluccio a few years before the quake. I do hope they have rebuilt much of the village.

Here is a status https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castelluccio_(Norcia) and I was there also in May 2018. The attached picture shows what the houses looked like. I have not been there since, but plan to go back on October this year if life is back to normal.

Yes, but in this case it was an extra sad situation since the hotel was located such that the avalanche would just hit it. The band that the avalache made down through the landscape was about 50 meters wide and the was a house 100 meters from the hotel that was totally unharmed. Anybody looking at the topology could have figured out not to place a hotel there. They probable didn't think of the danger of an avalanche.

Thank you for providing the link , also of Castelluccio;

about the hotel
You are right - everyone _ and certainly the local people - can tell you that is not a save place to built something...
I walk a lot in the Alps to see how clever and save the Rifugi's are placed.

About Castelluccio;

It is dificult for me to imagine how much shaking you need to destroy this beautiful village. Very sad it happened.
The landscape around it; these are not the mountains i like- almost a badland landscape.
Quite the opposite of the Dolomites.
There are many ugly mountains i find. Sometime you just see them falling apart.

Clearly I do not agree with you about the landscapes and mountains around Castelluccio. You can have a look at my gallery here https://www.hanskrusephotography.com/Landscapes/Umbria/

Thanks Eric, that's a while ago :)

Here is one from 5 years ago shot from that same gravel road you were on.

I'm happy to see that much of the village seems to have been rebuilt.
Beautiful shot. Thanks for sharing it.

No, the last picture was from before the earth quake. I do not believe that much of the village has been rebuilt at this point in time.

I don't think either. Reconstruction always takes ages in Italy.

Here are some pictures from l'Aquila from October 2012 https://hanskrusephotography.zenfolio.com/p237868454 and the earth quake was in April 2009. You can see from the pictures a bit of what state the regional capital of Abruzzo was in. Now in 2019 I was in there again and did not shoot really any pictures and a lot of the houses were still in a similar state. Some churches, banks and public buildings have been fully restored only now about 10 years later.
