Title: Are there any digital stereo cameras?
Post by: walter.sk on January 27, 2020, 06:28:24 pm
I was asked by a friend if there were any digital cameras with 2 lenses (and probably 2 sensors) that would be able to take 3-D images, much like the old Stereo Realistic film cameras.  I've searched on Amazon and B&H but couldn't find anything I could recognize except for 3-D VR cameras.  Anybody know of such beast?  After listening to my friend I'd love to try one, too, if they're out there.

It looks fine to me. What gives rise to your suspicions?

I see no problem either. It's a link to Google play.

I think there may have been a low res 3D digital 'snap' camera (just announced/planned/imagined ?) around at the dawn of digital compacts, but it may never have reached production. It certainly didn't catch on in any significant way.

You could just put a pair of digital compacts on a bar and get stereo pairs, if you really want to play with the idea.

I believe that GoPro made a system that had a special mounting set up (two cases side by side) for two GoPros and software to create the stereoscopic image/video from the sync'ed output of the cameras.

Yes, that works fine. And for stationary objects, one can use a single camera on a slide bar, or with some practice by balancing on one leg, and then on the other one.

For Windows users, the following free application can be used to convert/tweak/align/rotate stereo pairs for different output viewing options:

You were looking at them, they're the VR180 cameras.

2 lenses:
Insta360 EVO
Insta360 One R with VR180
Kandao Qoocam
Vuze XR 3D
Z Cam K1 Pro

Multiple lenses 360:
Insta360 Pro / Pro2
Vuze+

You can setup a Google Cardboard to view the images, I have the EVO and shoot a fair amount of VR180 video.
