Title: Problem printing a 17x13 print on Epson P800
Post by: mhaffey on January 18, 2020, 06:06:54 pm
I am trying to print an image from Lightroom on paper that I have cut to a 17 x 23 inch size .  I have created a 17 x23 template in Lightroom for this.  I am using Epson Baryta paper and the sheet feeder.  When I print all that prints is a thin strip about 2 inches wide.  I have tried printing several times and the size of the strip varies each time from 1.5 inches to about 3 inches.  When I am in Lightroom's Print Module it shows the print will be the same size as the cell settings I have selected, which are 21.76 and 16.76 respectively.  I have never had this issue with any other print I have made on this printer but have never attempted to print as this size before.  Any ideas as to why I am having this problem now?
Thanks,
Mark

Windows.  And the print size is 17 x 23, not 13.

In the printer properties dialog Main tab, check the Print Preview check box before printing and make sure that the preview image shows the expected correct size and placement for the image.

I didn't have the box checked, but when I did so nothing changed.  I am not expecting that it will change the printing of the image but will try later today.  Currently I am also having a problem with the printer leaving smudges near the top and bottom of the print as it comes out of the printer.  I am currently trying to correct this.
Thanks for your advice.

I tried printing with the Print Preview check box checked.  I also decided to use the standard paper size of 17 x 22 inches since the image will fit on this size paper.  When I printed the image printed at 21.75 by 14.25 inches.  The bottom 2.5 inches were just left off.   I have printed a number of prints on 8.5 x 11 paper and they all print correctly.  In the past I have printed images on paper as large as 11 x 14, but have not attempted to print at 16.5 inches before.   I would appreciate any help understanding the printer's behavior at this point.

How about a couple of screen shots of your settings.

Here are three screen shots.  I have attached them to this post as I don't know how to put them in the body of the message.

Did you try with landscape box instead of portrait selected?   It seems counter intuitive, because the paper is “portrait” oriented, but remember you are telling the driver and printer what to do with the image in relation to the paper size and orientation in the printer.

In Lightroom, the image will appear normal, not sideways, if you have the correct portrait/landscape option checked.

Attached two files, the one where the image is oriented visually correct (landscape box checked) will print correctly.  The other one ... oddly enough who knows because sometimes it works fine and sometimes it gives odd results like you are seeing.

I haven't tried using the landscape mode.  When I click the Landscape check box the image preview shows the paper and the image both in landscape mode, which surprised me.  I will cut another sheet of paper and try printing it this since you have had this work.

Thanks,
Mark

I've had issues printing via wifi at times that result in a partial print.  Not sure if this is your issue, but you could try connecting to the printer via USB if you're now using ethernet.

Bruce,
I have always used a USB connection for the printer.  I wanted to keep that aspect of things simple.

I print on 17x25" and 13x38" papers with no problem on my P800. I just created "custom sizes".

I also created Custom paper sizes but the printer isn’t printing at the specified size, which is the problem I was asking for help with.

Can you  provide a screen grab of your settings like I did?

What Driver Version are you running on your P800?

Also a screen grab of the top half of the Lightroom Print page. That is where the important data is.

To the OP: maybe a ‘duh!’ question, but, in LR page setup, in custom pages, did you perhaps put in incorrect numbers for the size and saved that size (say 2 by 23) as 17 by 23. “17 by 23” is, after all just a name for a size you design, you could call it something else if you wanted.

That is something I thought maybe I had done so I went back and checked.  All is as it should be, at least as far as I can determine.  To double check I tried printing the image using the default template of 17 x 22 which is already in Lightroom, which is when the print was 14.25 inches x 21.5, which cut off the bottom (on the image) 2.5 inches.  So I am still searching for answers.  I will post the requested screen shots when I get home tonight and have access to my photo computer.

I checked the Epson site. It appears that the maximum sheet size in imperial measure is 17 by 22. In metric, it is  A2, which is 16.5 by 23.4 inches. So you could try faking an A2, or use the roll setting.

Not really limited to the paper size that Epson sells.  I routinely print 17x25" and 13x18"

Here is the screen shot.  I don't know how to determine the driver version I am using.  It is the latest version as when I go to update it says there isn't any version to update to.

When you print on 17x25 is that done as sheet feed or roll feed?

Mark,

In "Print", Image Settings" un-click  "Rotate to Fit" and see if that helps.

I've NEVER used that setting.

Instead I use Page Setup in the Print Module.

I had this problem and stumbled upon this solution: go to the LCD panel on the front of the printer. Home screen -> System Administration (screwdriver/wrench icon) -> Printer Settings. Scroll down to "Paper Size Check" Deselect it -- turn OFF the automatic paper size check. See if that helps.

I want to thank everyone who offered suggestions to solve my problem printing a 17 x 23 print.  This past weekend I was able to print both a 17 x 23 and a 17 x 32 print without any difficulty.  I had not made any changes to my settings that had previously not worked.  The only change I had made is that purchased the roll feed paper adapter and installed it on the printer.  I purchased it both with the expectation that it would make feeding paper into the printer easier and with some hope it would resolve my printing problems.  As they are now resolved I don't know what role, in any, adding the roll feed adapter played in the resolution of the printing problems, but I am very happy that they are resolved.
Thanks again to everyone who offered assistance.

I've been following this thread as it has progressed, but now I have a question.  Perhaps I've missed something along the way but I just scanned all posts again and cannot seem to find anything referring to how you have been loading the paper.  Due to the size of the image I'm wondering what size paper you were trying to print on.  I can only surmise that perhaps you were cutting sheets from a roll and they were not a sheet size that Epson uses for the P800.  If indeed you were actually cutting from a roll, you should have cut to a standard size and then it would probably have worked.  Now that you have the roll adapter you can use the roll paper as it is meant to be used.

Just a thought  :)

You are quite correct that I was cutting the paper from a roll.  I had hoped to avoid the cost of the roll paper adapter as I don't do a high volume of printing and found the cost of the adapter to be more than I wanted to spend.  I was able to feed the cut sheets both through the sheet feeder and the rear feeder but encountered the problems I described.  I wasn't cutting the paper to a standard size as I had bought the roll paper specifically to be able to print photos that were greater than 22" in length.  I don't really understand why almost all sheet papers are sold only in 22" lengths for 17" wide printers.  This is a size that seems to me to be based on a doubling of the standard letter paper, which isn't sized for any photographic purpose.  A standard 35mm image at 16.5" wide would print to 24.25" long, which would need a 25" paper length.  And any panoramic images require greater length.  It further confuses me because when I was using a 13" wide printer the standard sheet paper size was 13 x 19, which accords well with the printing of 35mm images.

I had expected that cutting paper from the roll to the size I needed would work as I had read about other people doing the same and had done the same with my Epson 2200 printer.  I thought that as long as I gave the printer the sizing information for the paper all would be well.  You seem to be suggesting, and my recent experience tends to support, that with the P800, at least, paper sizes other than standard ones can only be used with roll media.  All is working well now with the roll feed adapter and I am now hopeful that was the answer to my problem.
