Recently I saw a review on an inexpensive anamorphic lens on a smaller format camera, 50mm 1.8x on M43. In general, an anamorphic lens is much more expensive than the regular lens due to the more complex manufacturing procedure.
What's the advantage of a 50mm 1.8x anamorphic lens on a M43 format over a, say, 28mm or 25mm lens on a full frame? Yes, I can see it let a smaller format camera to produce an image of a cropped larger format. That's all?

The only advantage of applying anamorphic lenses is to maximize your sensors’ pixel qty. Apart from this there are only disadvantages such as the cost price of the anamorphic lens, limited availability of anamorphic lens types, necessity to do re-scaling in post, after this not having square but rectangular pixels, and more.

The review you probably saw was for the Sirui 50mm f1.8 lens which is a 1.33x anamorphic lens. It is available in several mounts, M43, Fuji X and Sony E-mount it is currently on Indiegogo and the price is good for a lens like that, $599

This is an interesting thought.
I know a lot of people interested more in how the lens make the image blurring than how to mait it clear.

You also get a very interesting effect when you pull focus during a movie shot.
