I agree. Too often people try to create forced contrast in black and white, which ends up looking artificial. So this looks good to me. However, I do have some suggestions. You could try straightening the tree line surrounding the birch. And the white area on the bottom left can be toned down as it takes the eye out of the image.

I did the conversion in LR. That's unusual for me, as I tend to get better results from SFX Pro. I ended up with a very over-contrasty image his time.
John, you are absolutely right about the bottom left. I should have "edge patrol!" in block capitals taped to my screen.
