Title: Dan Wells and Apple
Post by: Ray Harrison on November 15, 2019, 04:03:16 pm
In many ways, this is an old article, even though it was recently written. I think we’ve heard for years now how Apple doesn’t care about the creatives who perhaps kept it afloat 35 years ago. Or how it doesn’t create machines like it used to or how it got rid of all the ports or only cares about iPhones/iPads/services (or whatever). Or doesn’t care about photographers. Or doesn’t produce cheaper machines. The list goes on.

I think the bottom line is that people now have a significant choice of top machines using top operating systems. It really comes down to personal preferences and what your tolerances are.

Apple in my experience (25 years) has always been a “my way or the highway” company who will drop a port or connector at the drop of a hat and produce expensive under spec’d machines. My guess is they’ll build their own A series chips for Macs too. But they have an excellent chip design department so personally I’m interested in how they shape that future. But that’s just me. I’m interested in their new Mac Pro and their new monitor. They obviously care about and have listened to at least some creatives out there :D.

Will Macs go away? Possibly, but the thing that doesn’t get pointed out very often is that the Mac business is a Fortune 250 company in and of itself (this can obviously fluctuate). It probably isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

I think we can all go enjoy a high-end machine of our choice and be happy. :)

Using Apple computers since 1980- must say i always enjoyed Apple being 'different'.
However, at this time the new MacPro is just a good fit for a few high end video makers that earn enough money to buy them.
The problem with Apple right now is that they do not produce anything between this macPro and the iMac that could serve a lot of creative people-like me.
They do have more interest in watches, iPads, phones...
In this way they have abandoned to support a certain creative group of people that they once very much supported and were very loyal to the brand.
It made me turn to a Hackintosh that serves me well, but this is not a real solution for many.

It is axiomatic that there are creative types that can't afford the $6000 MacPro with its $6000 monitor. It is great for Hollywood, but not for your average everyday creative type, including most photographers.

I have a 2013 Mac Pro and a NEC PA322UHD-2. Apparently like others, I had hoped for something like the 2013 model, maybe physically twice as large for cooling, etc, for $5~ $6K, but not to be. I really like the ECC ram (less glitches, 'pro' category machines, but $$), quiet fans, OS and far less to zero vermin, so PC's aren't for me. Dan's latest article (Feb 2020) has made me think about this. I seem to be somewhere between the iMac Pro and the new Mac Pro. Dan suggested that the iMac Pro is likely due for an update, at least to support the new fancy monitor. I use Capture One. The PA322 color is really nice and even. I find the monitor menu system clumsy to use, but it gets the job done- ditto for the companion software (now 64 bit). It's easy to calibrate with the companion eyeball. At 32" and 4K, the text is getting tinier as I get older. Scaling in the (Catalina) Prefs monitor panel causes Capture One (and everything else) to barf and stutter, so I've left it native. I looked at the iMac Pro in the Apple store, and the text looks fine. Seems there's some intelligence behind text scaling, since my test images appear the same size as on the PA322 with my crude tests. Haven't tried asking the store if I can install CO on it (demo mode).

ALL THAT SAID, here's my questions: How is the iMac Pro screen after calibration? What calibrator- I1? Any idea how it compares to the NEC's? Part with the NEC- how much am I giving up? I thought about driving the two of them, but having a 27" and a 32" means a new giant physical desktop (sigh). Or I go for the new Mac Pro ($$$$) and keep the NEC. Or wait for the iMac Pro...

I would appreciate any input!
