Title: Camera time zone settings for Map Module
Post by: soboyle on November 07, 2019, 09:23:33 am
I'll be traveling from the US to New Zealand and will use the Map Module to location stamp images when I return using a GPX file. Should I change camera clock to local time in NZ while there? I know there is a time zone offset in LR Classic, but that has given me problems before, it seemed to want to offset from GMT, not US eastern where I live. Any experience with this?

I set for local time. When I’m looking for an image and I want to find something shot at sunrise for example I am not up for the mental gymnastics that calculating the time difference between where I live and where I was shooting would require. Sunrise is around 6am or there about if you get my meaning. If the camera was set to the time where I live that would be a PITA.

The timezone offset feature in Lightroom is meant to compensate for the time difference between the camera (set to local time) and the GPS device (set to UTC).

One could set the camera time to UTC and never think twice about the timezone offset but this is kind of weird for non geeks. In practice, this wouldn't work well since camera clocks drift quickly and need to be adjusted frequently. If you need finer adjustment of the offset between camera time and GPS, e.g. if camera time was set incorrectly, I recommend using Jeffrey Friedl's plugin Geoencoding Support.

Cheers,

Fabien

I have made a habit of, whenever I arrive at a new time zone, to write the local time on paper and take a pic. Then I can use LR's time adjust tool (which has always worked fine for me) to adjust the metadata when I get home.

My wife and I both take photographs.  When we are together it is important that we have the same time on our cameras.  This means that when processing for a joint book we can have all the images in the right order in Lightroom.  We also like to have them with the local time where we took the images.  This means that when arriving we set to the same local time.  It makes life easier for us.

Best wishes,

Jonathan
