Title: Ice (ice, baby)
Post by: MattBurt on November 04, 2019, 12:31:03 pm
After the hottest September on record we just had the coldest October on record. So much for those autumn days that fall in the middle of those extremes!
With a week of regular subzero (F) temps in late October, we got ice in the shaded river canyon where the water backs up from the reservoir. This has been nice for ice skating with close to two miles of skatable ice. I've been out every day since it was thick enough to support me.
Yesterday I spotted some good ice bubble formations in the middle of the day and made note of their locations. Then I returned for some evening light and sunset with my landscape kit.
I skated to this spot which is maybe half a mile from where I parked. Everyone else was just leaving as I headed out. Soon it was just me on the vast expanse of ice which groans, pings, and pops under my weight. Those ice noises and my blades on the ice echoed back to me from the stone walls surrounding me. It was a bit eerie but I loved it. This is the kind of experience that makes me feel really alive.
The bubbles were pretty good but I have seen better. I'm hoping to find more before the snow comes and covers it all up. I'll probably be out there pretty regularly for the next few weeks or as long as it holds up.

Daytime skating from Friday. We like the long bladed "speed skates" for this kind of ice.
