Title: YouTube ads
Post by: Alan Klein on November 01, 2019, 04:20:42 pm
When did Youtube start ads?  I never had them before a couple of days ago.  How do you stop them?

Where? I’m not seeing them.

I think I've been seeing them for a  month or so, maybe a few months, but not on many videos and I don't watch YT very much, so I've probably only seen a handful and can't remember which ones ... maybe some Tiny Desk Concerts.  I'd guess they started when they added the  subscription service channel(S?) which wasn't too long ago (about a year I think).

I searched on this google https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHBD_enUS746US746&sxsrf=ACYBGNTh-tFcoeCUpqa-LqpaAcTtT07iiA%3A1572576498960&ei=8py7XeHhOcWy5gKa5aCACA&q=minolta+iiif+light+meter+shutter+speed&oq=minolta+iiif+light+meter+shutter&gs_l=psy-ab.1.1.33i160l3.1671.3265..5569...0.2..0.104.745.7j1......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j0i22i30j33i22i29i30.GWwltdlfYh0

Then clicked on the Minolta video on the left with the picture and got a 15 second Raymour and Flanigan ad before I got the Minolta video.  I tried just the link again but I didn't get the ad the second time.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjkPiYK2uFM

I tried it again and got an Alexa 15 second ad.  Then I got another ad JK Studios. 2:57 long.  I clicked on the end of video link and it did go to the end.  Then the Minolta video I wanted started.

Am I missing something? YouTube the source of so much entertainment and information in video format? Belongs to Google, or Alphabet rather. I have been seeing ads for years. To start with just at the beginning then eventually in the middle of some video as well. Am I stupid? Am I misunderstanding something?

Is it a geographical thing? Have you really not had ads on YouTube. I am shocked and annoyed if that’s the case.

No, you’re not missing a thing, YouTube has had ads for years, and as they get more popular with media buyers, they get more intrusive. You can pay google to make it stop by subscribing.

No, Martin.  I never saw ads until a couple of days ago.  I updated Chrome around the same time.   I also started to get ads "blanks" on Flickr around the same time as I go through my photos there.  They want me to buy the Pro version of Flickr to eliminate ads.  Aren;t some of these the same company?  I live in New Jersey if that's any help.  Maybe they didn't realize NJ existed until the other day. :)

Great. Thought I had woken up in a parallel universe. If rained all night, first proper rain in in over 6 months which is amazing but the world does look a bit different. Then this thing about ads on YouTube being new. I was wondering if I had had a stroke or something.

I pay to make the ads go away. Worth  every penny.

Just use an Ad Blocker. Use uBlock Origin (not uBlock!) for Chrome and Firefox.

I mostly watch YouTube on a TV using an Apple TV box. I don’t think you can run an ad blocker with that set up.

You can, with something like this: https://pi-hole.net. Though it's not quite 100% reliable, unfortunately.

Didn’t know about that. Anyway I pay a few dollars and that is 100% reliable.

I didn't even try my smart TV.  I noticed this problem just a few days ago on my desktop.  I'll see if I have the same problem on the TV.

I doubt an ad blocker will remove the YouTube inline ads.

Choice is to live with it or pay the $$s.  When YouTube switched to ‘Red’, the ads were few.  As time has gone on the frequency has increase.  Now, on longer videos, they will even slip an ad in middle of video.  Annoying, but, for now, better than $10/mo.

I'm finding myself just backing off of using the computer overall.  It's becoming a real time waster.

You can doubt, but I have not seen a Youtube ad literally in all my life.

Strange why some sites do not allow you to access with adblock. The problem may be that these sites contain a lot of advertising and advertisements, they make a lot of money on it, for some sites advertising is their only income. But I think that's not good, that if you have adblock you can not access the given site. It's a mistake on their part for most sites to do this. I personally use adblock, for me it is something normal. I use one of the best adblock for chrome (https://thinkmobiles.com/blog/best-adblockers-chrome). It seems better with adblock, there are no ads.

I wasn't getting any ads either or YouTube until about 8 months ago or so.

If you're not fond of ads and you're on a Mac consider getting "1Blocker".  Works like a charm and  its updated periodically.
