From a few years ago. Nikon D600 with 70-200mm Nikkor lens.

I like the contrasting idea. You might want to turn it into a black and white, though. The burnt highlights in color are a distraction, they might be a feature in b&w. Also, the out-if-focus background would be much less distracting if darker and in b&w.

I agree. The colour doesn't add anything.

It may look better than the original, but frankly, the highlight is so powerful and washed out that I do not think this image is salvageable unless you don't mind turning your highlights into a gray.

I am not one to automatically dismiss an image because of blown highlights. That's the way the world looks sometimes. The stark contrast between the brilliant tree and the dark cliff is, for me, an essential element of this image.
