I shot this photo on the just completed Isle of Skye photo workshop. I had 10 participants on the workshop and one of them dared to go out on a very narrow path to this position. During the week it was the only morning with great light when we saw the sun. We had quite some opportunity for photo during the week, but the mornings were a challenge. On the edge of the Atlantic this is not a surprise or unusual. When we left the island it was blue skye which would have been terrible had it lasted for the week. This year even more people were there than in previous years. But as long as you go out in the very early mornings it is ok as most tourists sleep when we photographers go out to experience the possible magic.

Yes we have had some really weird weather of late on the Island Hans, thunderous heavy black clouds and rain all day long, then an amazing sunset at the very last minute, or gin clear sky days from dawn, followed by heavy rain at dusk. Or days that are so hot it is like the peak of summer, when more often than not we are usually starting to have the first snowfalls across the peaks at this time of year. Also I am finding that autumn is about a month early this year, which is odd because you would think it shoud be the other way around and so I am already getting the sort of autumnal shots over the last week or so, that I would normally expect to be shooting in the first week of November.
Yes my friend these are strange days indeed.

Big variations can come and go, but I have felt the weather has been weird for some years now. In the Dolomites there was a huge storm last year that flattened some forest areas. See picture below. It is very local.

I’ve seen a similar effect in Massachusetts after a tornado. An alley of flattened trees through the forest as far as you can see.

I was told that the damage was caused by two strong winds flowing in each direction and causing downward strong winds which again hit only certain parts and left other areas right next unharmed. It was pretty amazing to see. There is a lot of damage right around the green lake, Carezza lake (Lago di Carezza).
