Title: How best to identify image relationships and purposes within a catalog?
Post by: agawthrope on August 31, 2019, 01:59:04 pm
I have a need to identify images in a consistent way that's easy to use - and remember - throughout my catalogue so associations between images and the purpose of different images is understood.  To elaborate a little; from an original raw file I may have several variants all processed slightly differently to satisfy different needs.  For example, a variant for: my eShop; baryta paper; gloss paper; Unlimited edition print; Limited edition print etc.

I'm sure these needs are not unique to myself and I'm wondering how others have satisfied them?  Currently I'm using a mix of keywords(mainly), Colour labels and handwritten comments as an overlay on the image(I'm using Capture One).

Key-wording images seems like the the most powerful and flexible solution, but it can get complex very quickly resulting in key-wording mistakes and difficult boolean logic.

Thanks,
Andy

I just use keywords with Smart Albums.
All originals are in a folder caller Originals.
Anything worked on in a folder called Live
Anything finished in a folder called Final.

Each of these then has folders by year eg 2019 then camera eg 2019_Canon then shoot with first image 2019-09-06_20204.
Sometimes I add a project.
Each image has the raw date as  prefix eg 2019-09-06_1920204
The camera adds the image prefix and DPP adds the date

Easy to find any image.

OK, Thanks Bob.

Since making this post I've spent much time with keywords and Smart Albums.
Using keywords is not a perfect solution but it's pretty good. :-)  Associating a child image with it's parent image is messy with keywords, but elsewhere keywords work fine.

Cheers,
Andy

How? You make a Smart Album called Family and include keywords John, Mary etc

Clever, hierarchical, keywording goes a long way ...
