Thanks to all of you for taking the time to comment. A friend of mine said that he had wondered about the purpose of a chipmunk's unusual markings, and now he understands.

Now, if you'd crop the green/blurred part, that betrays the tree, it would be even more enigmatic :)

True. I considered that, but came down against it in the end, at least for the color version. One cannot live by enigmas alone.  :)
