Cruising the southwest last summer shooting landscapes I explored this canyon during monsoon season.

Very nice.

A good shot betrayed by HDR treatment.
-
When you say betrayed by HDR treatment are you referring to multiple exposure blending? If so it's not what I did. It's one single exposure worked on in camera raw and photoshop. By HDR treatment are you referring to opening up the shadow area as much as I did? Either way, I like it and yes , maybe I should have made it look more realistic as far as dynamic range but I wanted to show the foreground in more detail.

However you arrived to it, it has that dreaded HDR look. Shadows opened too much, highlights killed to a muddy gray. Good thing you have raw. Salvation from an HDR Hell is just a few clicks away ;)

I like it Wolfman! The post-processing path is very subjective; if you like it, keep doing it!!
-
Thanks Smoothjazz. I admit that I opened the shadows more than usual and toned down the highlights in the sky in the left side so you could see more details in the clouds in that section.
-
Great scene, but to my taste it looks too bland, with the tonal range suffering a bit.

Same for me.
Keep more shadows and contrast and it'll be good.

Same here too. I'd like more contrast (but it's an easy fix and keep in mind that it's only a personal preference).

Agreed.

Ok gentelmen......I went back to the original raw and did a quick re-processing and backed off opening the darker foreground as much as I did previously.
Kept the saturation down a little more. The foreground in the original raw is naturally flat with no real deep shadows except in the rock crevasses.
-
Much better.

One more for good measure.

+1.

the 3rd image looks great.

the 3rd image looks great.
Yes. Very strong, and naturalistic.

Getting there!
-
Yes, back on Earth. I prefer the "natural" version…
-
It still doesn't look natural. However, if you like the way it looks, that's your preference.
-
After stepping away from the image for a couple of hours I did another round in camera raw from scratch and added more warmth this time. I think I'll leave it alone now.....I have enough versions and lot's of opinions. I like this current one.

Good idea. A near miss is still a miss. We all had those. There is always tomorrow.

I disagree
Most original fotos are "near misses", especially landscapes and nature. You can correct them with tools like Photoshop et al and make them to your taste, which, in the end, is all that matters
The important thing is YOUR intention. What you felt and saw.
Just MHO

Every mediocre photographer’s excuse ;)

Better than being a "Great Photographer" and ruining your ArtWork on purpose with monster signatures. an unequivocal sign of bad taste 8)

I went to Coal Canyon decades ago since I found a few nice pix by Phil Hyde in his work and it intrigued me. I wanted to find the magic spot there in the middle of nowhere in the middle of summer...
The last two versions are much, much better than the original HDR IMO. I think that Hyde would have been pleased with those, even though the original HDR is a nice HDR rendition though it almost appears that the sky was added.

I appreciate your comments. The first image that has that HDR look to most of you does not have a different sky added. I just admittedly over-processed it.
Thanks
