Title: Exported variant looks different in Photoshop
Post by: rogerxnz on July 21, 2019, 08:09:45 am
I right-clicked on a variant in the image browser in Capture One and selected Edit with Photoshop but the image looks much less vibrant in Photoshop. I have also tried the Edit with Photoshop command with the same result.

Please see the attached files. The unlabelled file is from Capture One and the other is from Photoshop. Both were captured on the same monitor.

What am I doing wrong?

different profile being applied or working space ?

A possibility I was also thinking of, and make sure to check the proofing settings in Capture One (and in PS).

Cheers,
Bart

And both show the same embedded ICC profile?

In some occasions I encountered exactly the same thing. I’m not able to reproduce it every time though. I checked that both in C1 as in PS I apply the same colorspace, AdobeRGB.

By the way, I also see differences in sharpness on screen in C1 between the RAF and the in C1 returned (Edit with Photoshop, close) TIF. This is not related to output sharpening (screen, print) as I’ve disabled this function. Besides this the RAF/TIF histograms also look very different, weird.

Jaap.

Thank you all for your comments.

I am using ProPhotoRGB in both apps and I'm using the Edit with command in C1 for the "round trip" but how do I check that the adjustment layer which I used in C1 to increase the gold in the leaves is being applied when sending the file to PS?

I see there are four options for the rendering intent in PS, but is there a way to select a rendering intent in C1? I think I recall that C1 has some issue with setting the Black Compensation Point. So, there are things to find out with these settings, maybe.

But the thing that strikes me is that the two images pretty well match each other in all respects except the colour in the leaves. The tones in the trunk and the island are the same in both images. So, the leaves are the only problem.

Maybe PS is saying the yellows are out of gamut or something like that? I think PS has a proofing option which will show out of gamut colours. Is there such an option in C1?

Sorry, for the number of questions but I am struggling with colour management at the best of times but that and trying to learn C1 is proving difficult!

You might be using that but the question is about what's embedded in each. Let's be certain that an embedded profile exists and is being used for preview. As for an adjustment layer used in C1, I can't comment, don't use it. Be sure that both are visible which may be an issue here. The C1 adjustment layer might not be visible in PS; I have no idea so my suggestion would be, see if without this layer, the two match.
You can't select a rendering intent for RGB working space profiles as they only have one table (colorimetric). So that's what you're getting; Relative Colorimetric.
ALWAYS view comparisons at the same zoom ratio too: 100%.

If I read correctly when you choose "edit with" the dialogue box comes up and you select Tiff and choose ProPhotoRGB as the icc profile?

When you are editing in C1 is the process recipe selected also in the icc selected there ProPhotoRGB ?

Have you tried using the soft proof option while you are editing (with the ProPhotoRGB recipe), that is the spectacle icon on the top menu bar , far right?  This should show you very accurately what the output looks like.

Keep in mind though that soft proofing includes sharpening (for screen, for print) settings while ‘edit with’ does not.

In my opinion soft proofing should not be used because of this during evaluating differences in the ‘edit with’ command doing the round trip. At 100% zoom while not applying soft proofing I see differences in sharpness between the RAW and the round trip TIF file, which should not be the case. And the Histograms look very different as well. Weird.
