Title: Aperture clipping display

Does Aperture have a clipping display feature?  Hard to imagine they would have left it out but I can't find it.

It does, at least for the highlights! Look into the View menu and choose Highlight Hot Areas, see screenshot below.

Also, you can adjust the point at which the clipping will show up under Preferences/ Interface/Hot Area Display Threshold by moving the slider.
