Title: Sony's sensor business is 90% phones (by revenue)
Post by: Dan Wells on June 14, 2019, 08:14:43 pm
As activist hedge fund investor Daniel Loeb calls for a split-off of Sony's sensor business, Reuters reports that 90% of the business is phone cameras. The whole sensor business makes something like $1.5 billion in annual profit for Sony, which is mainly a movie studio, video game company and music label. Assuming that camera sensors are not more profitable per dollar of sales than phone sensors (I actually hope they are, because it may help the business stay around), the camera sensors produce something like $150 million in annual profit.

The critical product on which our whole business and hobby depends is a rounding error (the profit on all the camera sensors in the world is almost certainly less than Apple makes on AirPods alone, and similar to what Sony Pictures can make on one big superhero movie)!

Interesting.  Let's hope they don't give up on us.
