Title: Google Pixel 3 Camera Night Mode
Post by: Peter McLennan on June 12, 2019, 03:48:24 pm
Using my new Google Pixel 3a in "Night Mode", I shot this hand-held about an hour after sunset.
This straight out of camera, available light image appears to be about a stop overexposed. Again, zero post production.
Not bad for a hand held phone shot.  This "computational photography" idea has some merit.

It looks pretty good and reminds me of Fuji Velvia. Very punchy. Fuji won the film world over with punchy colors. Even Kodak created another line of punchy film to compete. Whenever I take what I think is a more subtle image with subdued colors, people will critique and say punch it up!! I don't think it will ever go back to more realistic looking imagery.

This "Night Sight" mode as Google calls it, is apparently notorious for over-saturating the images.  In particular, the red channel, as evidenced by the hanging string of chili peppers in the first image at right.

Street images with mercury vapour sources look silly. In real life, my Honda is not green!  :)  Colour from the incandescent source at right appears reasonably close.

Still, it's relatively easy to subdue Googles' heavy hand with saturation.  The fact that I can record images in near darkness without a tripod is pretty liberating.  Remember, these images were shot about an hour after sunset. :o

Really very amazing shot without any post production, Peter. Google Pixel 3a is undoubtedly a wonderful android mobile set with a surprising camera. Thanks for sharing the pic.
