Title: Lightroom Mystery
Post by: Alan Goldhammer on April 23, 2019, 07:44:49 pm
Here is a strange one that I cannot figure out at all.  My Win10 PC does a full system image every week of the OS and program drive.  I usually save a couple of months worth of files just in case something goes wrong and I need to do a reimage to an earlier date.  Last week's image was 30 GB larger than the week before which was strange since I did not have any Windows updates or new programs installed.  I used the wonderful utility WizTree to see where and what the files were.  In my users account here the "Local" program data is stored there is an Adobe folder with subfolders for the various Adobe programs on my PC.  If one goes to the "LR Cache" folder there is a subfolder for Video (which is weird as I don't do any video and didn't know LR can do this).  there is another subfolder "Media Cache Files" where all of my LuLa purchased videos have been magically copied to with a ****.CFA extension which are for audio files of some kind.  The LuLa files all have a ****.MOV extension.  The copied files all have a 04/14/2019 date stamp which is the day they were copied.

I have no clue how this might have happened as I only use LR for importing stuff from camera cards or an occasional email from someone who wants something printed.  I have a 500 GB OS drive so I'm not in danger of running out of space but the fact that something moved all these files to the OS drive is weird and bothersome.  If anyone has any thoughts about this I would be interested in hearing them.

It is a bug affecting some versions of LR. Videos are being cached even if you don’t import them. Look in the following thread for a lengthy discussion:

I would say it is another episode of Adobe’s infinite wisdom

WOW!!!  I'm on LR Version 8.2.1 which I think just updated around the time the videos all were cached.  It is equally odd that this never happened in previous versions of LR where the problem was first reported.  Adobe is really off their 'A' game with this one.  I can see how users with a small OS drive can get royally shafted as the drive fills up with cached videos and the computer slows to a crawl.

It's clear that this bug was never satisfactorily fixed.  Now I've got to do a bit of research and maybe complain to Adobe about this though I'm unsure how much good that will do.

OK, now I have another problem.  If I go to try to clear the cache and set it to the lowest value, I cannot see any of the controls.  I open up Preferences and go to file handling and it's just not there.  So it looks like I'm SOL in terms of being able to fix this problem through LR.  Do I need to unistall and then reinstall???

I just read Alan's posting on the Adobe website after reading through the (exhausting) multi page discussion! I too am starting to see degrading performance in LR. Just posted this so I could keep up with the thread.

At some point in time Adobe moved the Purge Cache menu to the performance tab in Preferences.  You cannot instruct LR not to cache movie files but only limit the size of the files to less than 1GB.  The irony of all this was that LuLa LR videos with Michael and Jeff Schewe were some of the offending ones that were cached!!!!  Anyway, I've purged all the files and the mystery is now solved.  Now I'm waiting for the next Adobe bug to appear.

Alan, I looked for your problem, win10 & LR 8.2.1

I cannot find anything like it.  I do have my LR cache/catalog on a separate drive.  Primarily to keep separate from ‘C’ and ‘user’ area and reduce size and backup.

My catalog is always on my data drive along with images.  This was just something weird that happened and I'm still trying to figure out what it was.

I examined those cache folders today and also saw stuff that I didn't expect. One seemed to refer to the filename of a video I exported from PremierePro yesterday. The video has never been in LR, but the PremierePro project was in a subfolder of originals (stills and movies). So my working theory is that I may have imported other files from the parent folder, and that may have led LR to cache whatever Import found in those subfolders. It could explain other filenames in the cache. But I am only guessing.

I think this is exactly how it happens.  I had four LuLa videos in a "Photo Downloads" folder (Windows 10) along with a bunch of other stuff.  I recall downloading an image from a family member for printing and I put it in that folder for import.  When I imported that image it also looked at the folder and saw four sets of LuLa videos and happily put those into the Video Cache.  I shall not make that mistake again and will set up a separate folder for received images that need to be imported into LR.  What was weird is that in all the years of using LR, this never happened to me.

There is another possibility for this. For some reason, if you have LR installed before installing Premiere Pro, the adobe installer configures by default the Premiere Pro Cache in the same location as LR.
Check in Premiere Pro: Edit->Preferences->Media Cache.

Well spotted. It's true on my main PC and it explains why I noticed references to PremierePro projects opened late yesterday after I had closed LR.
