Once or twice a year I make a trip to New York City for a few days, usually taking the train from Boston. I am endlessly fascinated by whatever we are passing on the way, and on my latest trip I decided to try snapping pictures of scenes that interested me as we zipped by.
On a train you are much closer to what's outside the window than on an airplane, so there is very little time to choose a subject, compose, focus, and shoot. I am a pretty slow shooter most of the time, so I thought this might be a useful exercise in learning to make quick visual judgments.
Naturally, most of my shots were either quite blurry or missed the scene altogether. Anyway, here is a sample of the most appealing (least unappealing?) results. The first was on the way to NYC, and the other three were on the return trip four days later.
Comments invited (but don't call them Fine Art!)

Sorry, Eric, the first two are fine (art) :)

Aw, shucks! :( ;D

You can't win them all, Eric. The first is really fine! And I think, "exercising" your "seeing", is the way to go. That is pretty much how I work even when I know the results may be less than desirable. Like in flat light.

Eric, the first is particularly compelling.
Good exercise.

I like the first too.

Thanks, guys.
I think it was a worthwhile experiment.

At least you've avoided dangerously leaning chimneys, Eric. Well done! ;D

Nope, three and four for me: remind me of bits of the The Sopranos titles from New Jersey. The first is too closely associated with ARAT art and the second encroaches onto Slobodan's copyrighted space.
Wish I could find some of those old industrial scenes. Even if I do make it back to the UK, I suspect that political whitewashing will have had most of them demolished or converted into dwellings. I believe that a huge cotton mill in central Paisley, Scotland, is now a block of apartments.
Rather than bore the knickers off the world with more images of indentity-challenged icebergs and interchangeable seals and penguins (not to mention privacy-invading pictures of the more personal moments of poor old lions, zebras and giraffes!) we could all get together and create a charity for the preservation of factories, to where we could direct groups of photographers with nothing better to do. We could arrange special insurance terms for them and, hey ho, before you know it, have a thriving online business that will make us all rich until the next best thing comes along. The seeds exist; they just need good promotion and husbanding.
God, my fingers are cold as I type and type yet again in an effort to hit one key at a time and get it right.

The first image you nailed it! It's a nice juxtaposition of lineal movement from side to side with the punctuation of the vertical grove that adds a nice balance. Keep up your visual exercises and see what happens!

... the second encroaches onto Slobodan's copyrighted space...
Yeah, Eric, how dare you!? ;)

Thanks, guys.
And Slobodan: If I hadn't been brainwashed by your frequent architectural images on LuLa, I doubt if I would have even pressed the shutter on #2.

The first is my favorite too, Eric; maybe because I'm more partial to nature in general. I see that one as more related to your previous work, too. So maybe not quite as much of a step into the unfamiliar. :)

The first image is a beauty. Almost missed this thread as I don’t visit this section too often.

Thanks Arlen and Rajan.
My idea didn't seem to fit anywhere else, so I posted it in the Coffee Corner.

Forget about брат Слободан... Great artists steal, Eric! :-p. Besides, it looks like you took Slobodan's image and re hashed it to make it more precise and if i were on a jury...
-
Thank you, Larry.
And if you and Slobodan are ever in Boston at the same time, I'll buy you both a beer (or should it be Vodka?)

I feel your pain: I'm not a scion of the soup company either.

I always offer my most generous invitations to folks who are unlikely to show up. ;)
