Title: Larger Images - PSB Support, ever?
Post by: Christopher on February 13, 2019, 02:51:47 am
I know it has been discussed before and comes up from time to time in other topics discussing new features.. What do you guys think? Will we see it in the near future?
Lightroom was my main tool for storing and sorting all my files, however, it's getting more and more difficult. I now have over 200 keepers, which are over the Tiff / 512MP / 65000k limit and I have to store them somewhere else. It's super annoying not being able to manage all my images with one application.

I honesty never thought it possible that in 2019, Adobe still hasn't changed to a higher limit and support of their own psb file system. I mean w while back, it was more difficult to reach the limit, but since I got my IQ3100 and now with the IQ4150, it's super easy to reach...

Currently I'm still sticking around, as far as I know there are no other options, supporting psbs. Are there any options?

It's unlikely. For PSB, I think I have seen a comment from Adobe that displaying PSBs in LR would involve bloating LR with too much PS code. And while I have always wanted LR to import any "unsupported" files simply as OS icons, that hasn't happened and I see little prospect of change.

You can always generate a JPEG for each PSB and import that instead. Or try using linked smart objects (new file, then File > Place Linked and point to the PSB) and save the file as a small TIF/PSD which you can catalogue.

As John mentioned, there seems to be some challenges to the point that it probably won’t happen ... otherwise I think it would have happened some time ago.  Maybe with increased sensor sizes and other challenges to file size the need to surpass the 4gb limit on tiff files will change adobe’s approach. Anyway, I’ve been using the linked file technique for some time to enable easy access from within Lightroom without having to go to the operating system.

I cannot fathom why LR still can't catalog one of Adobes native file formats.

As far as I know the workaround only works for files bigger than 4GB, but not if we hit the 512MP Limit, correct?

Make the "container" file's canvas size smaller.

If PSB won't be supported, would an implementation of BigTIFF be any easier (TIFF files over 4 GB) ? Apparently the idea was already suggested seven years ago (https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_and_photoshop_should_support_bigtiff) and went nowhere since it didn't bother many people back then.

Cheers,
