Title: Sad and depressing scene
Post by: Cornfield on February 07, 2019, 09:10:14 am
The shot was taken yesterday in a remote village in southern Laos.  The mother is too busy getting her fix to pay any attention to the little girl.

Not sure if this should be made public or not?

Absolutely it should be published. This image is more powerful and telling than much of what passes for photojournalism today. In my opinion, this is precisely the kind of photography that media needs to galvanize interest in news again.

Well done.

EDIT: If the nudity is of concern, then the problem in not in the picture but in those who object to it.

Damn you, Corn! You just ruined that woman's future political career. 30-40 years from now, when this picture resurfaces, her career would end in a puff of smoke ;)

On a serious note, what indicates the "fix"? There seems to be a second child in her lap. And why the girl needs attention? She is inches from her mother and looks ok. Are we reading too much from an ordinary scene?

I hadn’t noticed the second child and you’re right that the front girl appears healthy. Still, while criticizing a different culture can be tricky, considering what appears to be a filthy setting and the open use of opium, one would like the think there are healthier ways to live.

I must be missing something. Perhaps it's due to my sheltered upbringing. What indicates the "open use of opium"?

Like others, I see nothing in the image to indicate drug use.  I may be naive.
Perhaps even more distressing is the noose hanging at camera right.

Isn't she holding a thick, bamboo pipe with which to smoke?

Yes.

And the contraption is used exclusively for opium?

At a stretch, Friars' Balsam?

Well, the bamboo tube, the photo was made in Laos(an opium producing country,) and in the original post where it says "The mother is too busy getting her fix to pay any attention to the little girl." So unless Cornfield is purposely over dramatizing the image, which I don't believe, then suggesting the use of opium seems reasonable.

I don’t minimize the drama, but imagine the image of a fat beer drinking western man hanging in the coach watching télé while mom is smoking one cigarette after the other while hanging on the phone for two hours while the baby lies in the baby room with a loaded diaper, crying for affection.

Ian Dalrymple kind of drama. And it is close, very close.

You mean melodramatic pap?  Well Ivo, it seems you've changed a few diapers yourself.   ;D

Interesting comments.

There is no second child.  She was using a large bamboo pipe with an old drink can fixed to the bottom of the pipe and this was been heated over a flame.  I have no doubt it was opium.

Almost 30 years ago I was married five years with a woman who developed a serious alcohol problem after the birth of my oldest son.  I certainly know how to change a diaper and I’m familiar with ‘melodramatic’ situations, yes.

No, it's Jo-Jo the signifyin' monkey. The Beatles told him to get back, so he did. Right back to the lap of the gods.

Look him up.

Ivo, my melodrama quip was in reference to Ian Dalrymple the movie maker. I guess I misunderstood your refernce to him. Sorry about that.

No problem Omer. I’m wrong referencing to Ian Dalrymple, I mean Theodor Dalrymple, the British psychiatre. My error.

Opium (or not) aside, does anyone think this is a good photo?

I don't often do critique; how to loose friends and in win enemies! Worse risk than politics, if you ask me.

It'll probably soon be frowned upon, too.

Are we reading too much from an ordinary scene?

Are we in the “Street Photography” section? ;)
