On a serious note, what indicates the "fix"? There seems to be a second child in her lap. And why the girl needs attention? She is inches from her mother and looks ok. Are we reading too much from an ordinary scene?
I hadn’t noticed the second child and you’re right that the front girl appears healthy. Still, while criticizing a different culture can be tricky, considering what appears to be a filthy setting and the open use of opium, one would like the think there are healthier ways to live.

Well, the bamboo tube, the photo was made in Laos(an opium producing country,) and in the original post where it says "The mother is too busy getting her fix to pay any attention to the little girl." So unless Cornfield is purposely over dramatizing the image, which I don't believe, then suggesting the use of opium seems reasonable.

I don’t minimize the drama, but imagine the image of a fat beer drinking western man hanging in the coach watching télé while mom is smoking one cigarette after the other while hanging on the phone for two hours while the baby lies in the baby room with a loaded diaper, crying for affection.
Ian Dalrymple kind of drama. And it is close, very close.

There is no second child. She was using a large bamboo pipe with an old drink can fixed to the bottom of the pipe and this was been heated over a flame. I have no doubt it was opium.

Almost 30 years ago I was married five years with a woman who developed a serious alcohol problem after the birth of my oldest son. I certainly know how to change a diaper and I’m familiar with ‘melodramatic’ situations, yes.
