With most of its park rangers furloughed, vandals and inconsiderate guests ran amok. Gates and posts were toppled, new roads carved through the desert by unauthorized off-road drivers, and a small number of the park’s thousands of Joshua trees were outright destroyed.

Correct.  The administrators who hatched and/or approved the 'open w/o supervision' shutdown operations policy will have their competence assessed by history.  I hope that they make a different decision next time, if there is a next time.

If you stick to teaching, freeloading off people you meet and snapshots of your travels you’ll be personally rewarded with happiness. The other route will only consume your short time left on earth with more hate and stress enabling free thinking. But I understand your lack of political wisdom as you were a prisoner of your environment being brain washed for so long.
