It was so quiet when I was stood here taking this shot of the ancient and oddly shaped peak of Sgurr a' Chaorachain (https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/torridon/profiles/Sgurrachaorachain.mp3) the other week, that my eardrums actually started to whistle.
Probably all that high volume heavy rock music that I have been constantly blasting through my eardrums over the decades, that is finally coming home to roost... ::)

It's a fine image. And quite silent to my long-defective ears. ;)

My gimpy left ear, victim of too much close range electric guitar amp-erage, used to whine a bit in cold weather. It's been much better since I backed off the volume (and was forced to play less often by an also-gimpy neck and right shoulder).

Thanks everyone and yes tinnitus as well as all the other many and varied problems associated with getting older, is wonderful thing isn't it? Although always a much more preferable option than the alternative I suppose.
My mother refers to these types of ageing things as Decripititus, which is quite an amusing term. In fact she's quite good at making up strange sounding words such as this and that actually seem to mean something.
So yes, as we age, we all begin to get Decripititus according to my mom ;)

I've read somewhere - I believe in "Overexposure" by Susan Shaw, that Tinnitus can be an hazard coming from inhaling gases from the Stop and Fixing baths in S&W photography.
This could be the case for (older) people coming from the "Wet Ages".
An occupational risk, like being a Hatter as the Mad Hatter of Alice in Wonderland (in this case it was lead not Hypo ;) )
From that derives the expression "Deaf as an Old Photographer" 8)

I often tell (as in shout at the top of voice) my nonagenarian father, that he is as deaf as an old boot, but then I think I am probably mixing my metaphors, but it doesn't seem to matter, as he can't hear me anyway, yet insists he isn't deaf, even after he was awarded a war pension for getting blown up but surviving, yet losing most of his hearing.

There is also "selective hearing."
For example, when my wife asks me to do something, I often can't hear her. ;)
