Title: HELP: Epson p9000 all of sudden won't switch from matte black to photo black

Right in the middle of a job on a Friday evening our Epson p9000 has decided not to allow us to switch from matte black to photo black. When it switches normally it does a cleaning, now it's cleaning, gets to 99% and says "automatic cleaning error" and asks us if we want to retry which we have multiple times to no avail. Of course tech support is of little help- so here I am at one of the temples of digital printing knowledge to beg you guys for an answer and even better a solution. Firmware is up to date, we print nearly daily, and have never had a problem till right now! Have you tried restarting the printer and making sure all print jobs are out of the print q?  If the firmware is up to date and you've restarted it and IF the printer is still under warranty, it's best to contact Epson and talk to a specialist (562-276-1305) and inform them of the issue.  The warranty will cover any fixes/repairs or even having it replaced if it's not fixable.  If it's out of warranty, you may need to get it fixed and pay for the repairs.

But hopefully a tech specialist through Epson can confirm the issues for you or you can contact an Epson Authorized Service Center (https://epson.com/servicelocator?productCode=SPT_SCP9000SE) for assistance.

Stating the obvious, checked black ink and maintenance tank levels?

Thanks for your reply. Yes- we have done all of those things. The printer is from 2015, so out of warranty. Epson tech support was of little help so we got in their ourselves and resolved it through sheer will... and Q-tips and Windex.

Glad to hear you have resolved.  As an owner of a P9000 I have not encountered this issue but if I do could you provide some more detail on hope you resolved?

+ 1 -- Yes, it would be great if you could perhaps let the rest of us know what procedure you used to resolve this issue.  The only part of your explanation so far that I would have a problem with is the use of Windex, if it has been applied to the print head.  For some time it has been rather well documented that any product containing ammonia can indeed have negative effects on the laminate on the print head.  Otherwise, it would be interesting to have your fix method if you wouldn't mind.
