Title: Connecting Sinarback 86H to 2018 MacbookPro
Post by: fpoole on January 03, 2019, 10:12:05 pm
Is anyone working with this setup, or any FireWire 8oo  MF back for that matter?  I was told I would need a powered FireWire hub along with 2 Apple adapter cables.  Not many choices in powered FireWire 800 hubs.  Would appreciate any feedback from someone using this setup and any issues that may come up.
Also, any issues with Mojave and Sinar Captureflow software?  I’m still using Captureshop running on High Sierra and it is very stable.
Thanks

A Tb3 to tb2 adapter and a Tb1/2 dock that has a fw800 port and you should be fine.

I use the FireWire port on my IQ 3100 all the time because my usb connection in the IQ is finicky. I just use the old Apple adapter FW800 - tb2, then a new tb2 - tb3 connector. Just the basic white ones from Apple.

Dave

Added Note: this is for connecting to a 2018 15" MBP.

One thing to note about the IQ backs compared to others - you can tell the back to not pull power from firewire.  I'm not sure this is an option on the Sinarback and I'm almost positive the P/P+ series backs don't have the option.

The p25 (non plus) and p20 (non plus) did not have that option. Every other P and P+ backs did have that option.

Does not need to present a problem when using a powered FW repeater. I have used that with my CF backs and H4D (at the time it could not draw from the FW port).

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.
I think a powered FireWire hub is necessary with the MacBook Pro..  I am also using LC shutter which is an additional power draw.  It will be a backup system, but still needs to be stable.

Hi Frank - if you're using the LC Shutter, it is advised to also use the 12v power supply.

Thanks Steve,
I needed the 12v power supply with the 54H back and LC Shutter.  I have the 86H connected directly into a MacPro tower and found I didn't need the power supply, even though Sinar recommends it.   I'll let you know how things go on the MacBook Pro. It seems that the power supplies on Macs can vary.

Yes they certainly vary. Firewire resources vary on different Mac models, even MAC OS versions can impact power allocation to internal components. A power supply will help alleviate the additional burden of the LC Shutter, but hopefully, you won't require it.
