Howdy,
Have not posted here for a while but know this is the place to come for expert advice.
Going on trip to Japan soon. Want to bring a 28mm fixed lens camera, or relatively travel capably camera body with 28mm lens. I will be shooting about 80% street and 20% landscape, almost all handheld. May bring a small tripod.
In the past, I've brought a Leica Q and Ricoh GR. I own the GR and have rented the Q. Both have worked well. Slightly prefer the Leica Q due to image stabilization and wider apertures.
I greatly prefer 28mm perspective, my eye does not like shooting 35mm.
Anyway, should I do the Leica Q or Ricoh GR again, or is there a newer, better competitor? How about a Fuji system like the X series with an attached 28mm equivalent lens? Would that be significantly better, yet still portable?
The Ricoh GR seems perfect but will not be on the market in time for my trip.

The Leica Q is an excellent camera. A Fuji XPro2, XE3, or XT3 with an 18mm lens would likely be a step down. The 18mm is not Fuji's best effort, and the smaller sensor size will not yield a quality improvement.

What are your output requirements? If you're printing large that's one thing, if the photos will be viewed only on screen that's quite another.
In addition to the systems already listed a m4/3 camera like the Olympus Pen F is an option. The IBIS is excellent and there's a number of 14-15mm lenses available, so you should be able to find what you need in the size/weight/speed trade space.

for output requirements, I'd say anything over 22MP is fine for me. Ricoh GR is at 16...so not ideal, but that lens is very sharp and I have a 72 x 72" print that is excellent..

Hold onto your money. The Ricoh GR3 is due out any time soon. It is 24 megs, 2.8 lens @ 28mm equivalent.

Why would you buy a Ricoh GR3 if you already had a Leica Q?

Fraction of the price of Leica. And much more unobtrusive design for 'street' or spontaneous photography.

Never question the motivation of a fellow suffering from acute GAS.
Such a person just knows that it's always the camera that makes the snap. Simple maths: better camera = better snaps; newer camera = newer, therefore inevitably better snaps!

The best camera to travel with is the one you already know the menu system of.
You'll be better occupied framing unfamiliar sights than missing the shot working out how the heck you select C-AF.
I used to have a Ricoh GX200.
I wish I'd never sold it.

People have different ideas of what a 'travel camera' is. For me, it's a camera I can drop into a sealable plastic bag and hide in a coat pocket if the rain comes down heavy. 39oz of Z7 and prime glass would be a bit on the hefty side for that.
At least until some real world user reports on the Z7's weather sealing have come in. :)

Then the GRIII is the obvious choice IMO.

The Z7 is fully sealed just like the D850.

I love my Sony RX100 iv for a simple pocket-able camera. I'm not sure how it compares to Leica Q or Ricoh, but I've always been very satisfied with the IQ.

I had not heard of the Fuji XF10, but it seems it might suit you. Very compact. Very inexpensive. No eye level viewfinder, though. Image quality ought to be decent.
