Pleasingly weird. Perhaps a little too brown?

Thanks Jeremy. I think you're right, and I plan to continue to play around with the tint before printing.

I think if it were my project, I’d try introducing a bit of backlight. Not very much, but I bit would (I think) give them a lot more depth.

Sadly, my first response is (*^#$&*^%%$!!! , having stumbled over these annoying seeds a zillion times - and - they do not rake up well - bounce all over the place. My cat, on the other hand, found them quite entertaining. Sweet gums are fast-growing, and do very well in Missouri. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidambar_styraciflua

However, they are lovely in themselves, and this is a nice photograph.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have several photos with backlighting, but they didn't accomplish what I had in mind, which emphasized the sharp spikes by contrasty imagery. However, now that you mention it, I think I'll revisit those backlit photos and see if any merit further work.
