Title: AI Gigapixel, strange issue on uprez from a Kolor pano
Post by: Paul2660 on December 04, 2018, 09:26:56 am
Working with the latest version of AI Gigapixel. I wanted to uprez a shot, taken in multi segments, into a pano.  Kolor Cylindrical was more than likely the stitching format I picked based on the name of the file.

In CC, the image shows the final work, after I warped manually the edges and odds are did some cropping.  Photoshop sees the file correctly, and uprezing with PS works as I expected.  However in AI, the file loads showing what appears to be the original Kolor projection, i.e. cyindrical. And does not see the image as Photoshop or other tools do.  You can still uprez, but having to go back and re-warp or other solution is strange.  I have not tried this on many other Kolor panos, or Photoshop panos, yet, but will test to see if this is something due to Kolor or all pano projections that AI is going back to something deep in the image projection.  Note in photoshop the correct image shows to the correct output resolution.

Screen shots below, showing file opened in photoshop then AI Gigapixel and you can see where Gigapixel has gone back to the original projection.  Note the image is flattened no layers involved.

Hi Paul,

Strange case indeed. I assume it's flattened and then saved as a TIFF? Does it do the same when you save it as a JPEG? If not, it has to be something in the TIFF header MetaData. Could transparency have something to do with it (try saving without)? Do you delete pixels when cropping, or do you preserve all pixels (and transparency)?

Just some random thoughts.

Cheers,
Bart

I've been happy to see that when my files are too large for the RAM in my system, I can segment the large image and run the segments (usually just 2) through AIG.  The up-res'd segments can be put back together easily.  So, if it happens to be an image size issue, processing half at a time works fine.

Hi Bart,

Yes flattened, saved as a tiff, standard in photoshop.  Kolor outputs as a tiff, I always pick the same defaults, no alpha channel, etc.  Not tried as a jpg but will later today.

I also need to check a Photoshop reposition  or cylindrical pano to see if they do the same in AI, after manual warping.

The only way I could reproduce your preview in AIGiga was to save a TIFF with an alpha channel.  If I make a TIFF in PS, elevate it to its own layer and delete the corners of the image (so the image in PS shows the checkerboard pattern in the areas with no image) and save the TIFF and bring it into AIGigapixel, the areas that had been deleted show up as white in the AIGiga preview.  If I make a TIFF stitch in AutoPano and save it as a TIFF with an alpha, and I bring that into PS and reduce it in size but keep the alpha intact and save that as a TIFF, the AIGiga preview of that image shows up like yours - there is a checkerboard pattern where the alpha channel is black.  If I crop this image with the alpha so that the crop gets rid of all of the black in the alpha channel, then the image appears as it should in AIGiga - cropped with no transparency.  This occurs even if I disable the "delete cropped pixels" checkbox in the Crop tool.

I will admit that I did not try all sorts of permutations and combinations to see what might be influencing this, however...

Are you positive you loaded the same image into AIGigapixel that you processed and cropped in PS?  I can see the filename of the TIFF loaded in AIGigapixel (that is a long filename!) but no filename in PS.  That is, are you sure you didn't load the image from AutoPano by mistake (with an alpha)?

I am not trying to insinuate anything here, but I've done stuff like this in the midst of trying to troubleshoot and it was a slip up in version control that made me think something else was going on.

Good luck with this one, the AI products from Topaz are ... quirky.

Hi,

File was the same, I just renamed it since AI doesn't allow you to "rename" a file, just add output to the extension.  Something that has bugged me since day.
Reason is AI will over write an previous file, not create a new file, say you are changing parameters etc.

Your point on the Alpha channel may be the issue.  I normally don't use an Alpha channel, and never save one.  I realize that both Ptgui and Kolor will add one by default unless you tell it not to.  I must have missed it on this one.

I run a test on a few other panos tonight.

Thanks
Paul
