Next was a quick trip to the Palouse after the shortening of the Rainier trip. I shot these slightly under exposed on an overcast day then brought up brightness and saturation to give them this look. Barn was shot using Fuji X-T2 at ISO 320, f13, 1/500. Fuji 55-200 @110mm. Country road was taken using Fuji X-T1 at ISO 200, f16, 1/250. Fuji 55-200@ 104mm.Both shots handheld to give a slight blur( a more artsy feel). C&C welcome as always.

Graphically speaking, they are both excellent. I am not so sure about “slight blur” being artsy, however.

But I "see" these as potential nice abstracts in b&w as another treatment.

I like the curves and shapes and Palouse is also on my list of places to visit. Regarding your technique question: I think that handholding to give a softer look is not a good one and not controllable. Also stopping down that much should not be needed for DOF. You loose resolution by that and if you after the fact want a softer look try negative clarity in LR or ACR. E.g. -20 or so. You can also use a local edit like a grad filter or brush and then use negative sharpen. If you go below -50 a blur starts. If you want the entire image affected use a hard grad filter and drag it over the entire image. Not something I do normally but have done on occasion where I wanted to soften a part of the image.

Slobodan, Again thank you for the input. Your comments prompted me to look up pictorialism. Having read up on it a bit i would agree with that designation. I thoroughly enjoy shooting in this location and wanted to convey how it impacts me. I also neglected to say that the air was hazy from field burning.

Thank you Hans. I live about 1 1/2 hours from there. Will try your suggested technique next time I go down there( waiting for some snow on the hills and a partly sunny day).

Here is a thought. Print it on canvas, which will further reduce the detail (or reduce the importance of detail) and most people would think of it as an oil painting. Such ambiguity (is it painting or not) helped me sell a single picture multiple times in art fairs (though the ambiguity was not coming from a deliberate blurring, but as a natural effect of rain on glass). Otherwise, I believe that a photograph should be reasonably sharp, as inherent to the medium, unless there is a compelling reason not to.

There should be virtually no blur at 1/250 and 1/500 even handheld. I like the painterly look you achieved.

Thank you Aram, I much prefer the color versions myself. As to the amount of blur; it is slight at those settings but I am 66 and even with ois on, it was a windy day so it happened. I had my tripod with me but liked the effect so much I went back 2 weeks later and shot more images the same way. Thank you all for your critiques and encouragement.

Just for a follow up . This image was taken 5 years ago in the same area but with a Nikon D600 on a tripod. Settings were ISO 200,f13,1/80 with a 70-300 Nikkor at 232mm. Not one of their best lenses I know but it was affordable. I have since sold all my Nikon gear and use Fuji but that was mostly prompted by problems with the camera bodies.
