I have been a LR user since LR2 and currently run LR6.
If I input a single search word, the images returned for that search include images that have the keyword as well as some that do not include the keyword. Leaving me with a feeling of distrust when I search.....despite incorrect images, am I getting all the images that actually do have the keyword.
For example
Searching on “kite”....results bring up some (but not all) kingfisher images despite not having “kite” in keywords.....got any ideas?
-
Is kite a synonym for kingfisher. Kite is a type of bird.
-
In your search are you using the correct parameters? TEXT, FIELD, Contains, Contains All, etc.?

Without seeing all the keywords associated with that image, it's difficult to help.
I've found that LR often does find images that initially don't seem to fit the criteria, but when looked at in detail it's got it right. eg is kite within other keywords ? eg parakites

In the Keywording panel, switch the view to Will Export and compare it with the other views. This will reveal if "kite" is being added as a synonym. But depending on how you are searching, which you should describe exactly (eg On Text tab, All searchable metadata) the text could be elsewhere.

Does Lightroom search using synonyms? Does it have a built in Thesaurus?
-
No, there is no thesaurus. But you can add synonyms to any keyword - right click it and Edit Keyword.

They are not really synonyms. They are just additional keywords as the example shows.
-
In Lightroom terms, they are "synonyms". I didn't enter real synonyms in my example, as you notice, but that was just to show you where the feature is. One is free to choose to interpret the synonym box loosely or strictly.
-
You can also check other metadata like folder names, titles, captions etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions, as soon as I return home I will try these out and post back.
None of the keywords for the kingfisher image contain "kite".
