Title: On the Streets: an open image sharing thread
Post by: KLaban on November 08, 2018, 12:41:19 pm
Title says it all, an open image sharing thread for work shot on, of and around the streets. This has little if anything to do with the contentious genre Street. No rules, anything goes including RobC's pet pooch peeing against a lamp post.

I'll start.

The conversation, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India.

Nice image.  And quite thematically resonant this week for those of us south of the border.  But I suspect I am treading on shaky political ground, so I think I had better leave it at that.

Politics, perhaps. Fashion, definitely. But for both (as Heidi Klum says on Project Runway), "One day you're in, and the next day you're out!"  :)

This one predates me, having been taken by my dad in late summer 1958. The three ladies are my mom, my Aunt Anne and my cousin Anne. Aunt Anne was my grandmother's (ack!) mom's sister-in-law and the mother of cousin Anne. This is in Wishaw (I think), Scotland.

And the blue one is a Barkas. Even more legendary. I had one, modified to camping Van. But I forgot to keep my foot on the pedal down hill, so the lubrication stopped and I ruined the two stroke engine.

We called it a ‘rententen’

Given that this is a former British colony (Cyprus), I’d venture to say it is a Mini.

That was my initial thought and then I wondered if Trabant had manufactured a knock-off Mini.

It really, really is. I wanted to avoid the dilemma of is it Street or Street Art or indeed something else entirely.

Could be worse, I knew a couple whose definition of Street was based on medium!?!?! Really, who'd have thunk it.  ::)  ;D

Thanks, Matt, appreciated.

Yes, for myself and my work choice of destination is an important part of the process. Of the locations of the last few images India was by far the most satisfying, photographer friendly people and opportunity around every corner. Morocco is the most frustrating of destinations, opportunity around every corner but photographer phobic people. The Canary Islands, Spain, pretty much devoid of anything I’d want to point a camera at - I was there for some R&R after some harrowing surgery.

Your  Masai boys are particularly handsome, were you able to capture many images of them, portraits perhaps?

Thanks, this was all I got of those boys, unfortunately. Were were going on safari and already late due to getting our tents robbed the night before. So I just shot that through the windshield of our Rover.

Given how dark it was, it certainly was not a domain for a classic hand-held photography, hence the emphasis. Advances in high ISO, image stabilization, smart HDR, etc., are making possible what until rather recently necessitated a tripod.

;-)

My dad's basic approach was 1/60th sec. and whatever aperture resulted in a correct exposure at that speed. If needed he'd use 1/30th sec at f/2.8 (Retina IIc) or f/2 (M2). He'd ramp up the shutter once he reached f/8. On the Retina (analog mirrorless!)—used for the Wishaw, Scotland pic earlier in this thread—he was limited to 1/500th sec. maximum as that camera uses a leaf shutter. Given Kodachrome ASAs in the '50s & '60s I doubt he ever needed to stop down past f/8.

Hey Rich, really like that shot of the people under the tree with scattered light. Despite their size, the people are clearly the dominant element.

Keith the boar or pig and the shrine are really fine! You have a style which is I would call naturalistic and away from hyperrealism or sensationalism. Really fine.

In the corridors of power. This is the private Toronto Club (opened 1889) with light reflected from a glass bank tower across the street (one of many in the area). The towers both restrict and direct light on a sunny day.

What can I say , she - although I suspect she was a he, Holy Bull didn't have the same ring to it - was a poseur.

The first accessory I bought for my cameras was a roll of black insulation tape: there's never a red dot or any branding in sight, and still she saw me coming.

Joking aside, it's more than stealth, which doesn't actually come into play for much of what it is I seek to do, but rather it's about being perceived as non-threatening and not being taken too seriously by those I seek to photograph.

I doubt I could be further removed from being a gear freak, I believe in finding something you love using and using it. That said, limited funds mean I have to take great care in choosing lenses, particularly at Leica prices.

Family was shot with the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Some users report curvature of field but I've never found it to be an issue. Wonderful, bitingly sharp, walk-around lens. I wouldn't be without it.

Many of the environmental portraiture images - for want of a better term - I've posted here have been shot with the Zeiss Sonnar ZM 50mm f/1.5 which has very different qualities. Used wide, f/1.5 or f/2, it is sharp centrally but falls off rapidly giving bags of character. Stopped down it is pretty decent across the frame: a case of two lenses in one. Again, I wouldn't be without it.

Most of my interiors are shot using the Leica Super-Elmar-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH, it's simply the most astounding wide I've ever used. Once again, I wouldn't be without it.

Of course, once lens choices are made I can put all the boring thoughts about tech to one side and just love using them.

I suspect you won't object to a comment like this so I will gamble :)

I could see why you cut the 2CV but it didn't work for me because it was so far away from the other strong element of the image the triangle made by the roof on the left. Maybe it's me being too simplistic but while there is a tension with the two things pulling in different directions the space between is too large and a bit busy for me.

Might look totally different printed though where it's easier to take in the whole thing.

I’m happy with comments about the picture, that’s why I post them. It’s a relief to get comments on the visual aspect and not on the genre or whatever cheap arguments.

If it didn’t work, it is not good. Point. This is the last step in editing and preparing for sequencing the série (it’s part of a série) see if the image still works if nobody tell blabla about it and without a large explanation.

In this case, it doesn’t. That’s great to know.

Tx for the feed back. I could only hope for more comments like this.

A short note aside the picture. I don’t chase ‘pretty’
The image is not about pretty. It is about suburbs of a small province town in Flanders.
Prettiness is relative, how can pretty survive in certain environment?
P.e. Is a beautiful girl in a harsh environment pulled down, or does she lever the situation to a more pleasant level.

That kind of questions....

Tx for you feed back, much appreciated.

In all honesty I find them both muddled and without focus which can be good but in this case I'm not convinced. I'm not sure what reward I get from studying the detail of the second one and I'm not convinced that there is any strong composition there.

The Roman one? Is the contrast between what might be seen as old and relatively new what you were after? For me I suspect the picture is in the area around his leg and shadow where a good deal would be implied not shown explicitly.

Probably just me being dozy though. Not been a good morning so far :)

It is about irrelevance.
Focus is outside the frame. I like the idea to photograph aside the focus, kind of ignoring the obvious.
For me it is a phase between one approach and another approach. A never ending quest.

The Roman warrior is one of te first attempts, a finger exercise. The second reflects how I feel about Christmas period. So if you feel muddled, yeah, that’s exactly Christmas in the streets of Antwerp, there is no reward.

Indeed. Awful. Aren’t you tired of it already over there? Aren’t we here too?  ;)

No, I’m not. And Awful is a powerful sentiment that is equal to beautiful.

I understand it disturbs you’re warm and fuzzy feeling.

And Slobo, who are you trying to pull in the debate? You can join the constructive discussion as well instead trying to nuke everything what doesn’t please your eye.

That was an attempt to circumvent the ban on political discussions ;) I was referring to immigrant tensions on your and our borders. Nothing to do with my judgment of your image, which I otherwise think is ok.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. And by no means would I ask you to leave LuLa. I find your contribution, in images and debates, refreshing.

I was honestly on the wrong leg , Slobodan, and I’m glad I am. I apologize for my misunderstanding.

Don’t break open my mouth. Our government is falling over the Marrakech deal.... but this is politics  .....

Have a save trip to Cuba, I look forward to your pictures.

Not a nice comment, in my opinion.

And yes, they were poor.

No Sir.
You didn't offend ME.
These children are not anoymous. I gave even the name and address with permission of their parents.
You crossed some limits.
That's all.

Rabanito, you have the ability to remove all your comments that quote others. That way no offending comment would stay (although they were not meant to be personal, but a sarcastic reference to recent political debates). Sorry for touching the nerve.

The natural order of things.

This image, although semi-formal, nevertheless shows an excellent eye for composition and light; the colors, shapes and elements are very well balanced. Most of the work you post is likewise good. Altogether, you have some of the best body of socially and culturally related work I have seen on any site. We can't go back and pretend to take photographs like the greats of the past. Those were different times, so we have to find our own way and voice. I think you have done that in a way that is sensitive to the people and culture of the places you visit. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks, John, very much appreciated.

We happened upon the group of highly excitable kids who demanded our attention, demanded to be photographed and demanded that we take their direction. The strange thing is that despite the formal look all the poses were of their own making, quick fire, one after another, after another, after another...bless 'em, they were little shining stars. The only downside, it was so frenetic that I missed more poses than I caught.

India was everything we'd hoped for and more: counting the days until our return.

As an illustrator I was rarely called upon to work in B&W and as a painter it wouldn't even have crossed my mind. Colour has been central to my entire working life, it is a joy that I can't imagine being without.

As an aside, what attracted me with this particular pose was that at first sight it looked rather like a proposal, but on closer inspection there's the hint that the little imp was making a fist.

Keith,

Absolutely! Since art school, the interaction of light and color has been my subject...whatever I have or will paint. It's the magic that gets me going and sustains my life.

Teach me a lesson.

At first glance I thought huh this is boring and then I saw the composition. It was that intruding boat that stopped the closing click then I saw the groups of people and the triangles. It works. I don't think it would work in mono as the colours are important as well.

Well seen and captured.

Bundi, India, where women are the mainstay of the manual labour gangs. In this case they are installing a new sewerage system which will replace the open sewers.
