Title: Macro for Sony e mount
Post by: PeterAit on October 19, 2018, 12:09:52 pm
I know that Sony has their own, and Sigma has one, but are there any other choices? Thx.

There's the Voigtländer 65mm f/2 APO. Manual focus. Everything I've seen & read about it says "excellent performance."

Voigtlander 65mm f/2 APO and coming soon, the Voigtlander 110 f/2.5 APO, which is actually a 1:1, while the 65mm is a 1:2.  I think it's worth having a Sony system just because of these lenses.

I have the 65mm.  Excellent color correction, and probably the sharpest FE mount lens you can buy, however, I was wowed by some samples of the new Sony 24mm 1.4 GM @ 1.4.  That lens is insane, but not APO by any means (and also not a macro lens).

I have the 65mm VC but I bought and tested the 70mm Sigma.  While very good I returned it as the VC was better.  I was testing it at 18-24" as I recall as I don't do true macro....

I use a Sigma 150mm Macro V2 with an adapter.  Anything less than 100mm you have to get too close to some things you don't want to get close to.

When I switched from Canon to Sony recently, I kept my greet Canon 180f3.5L macro used on an adapter. Focus speed is not usually an issue here with this type of work, and I could not see a better native lens choice right now. Also kept my TS lenses for the same basic reasons.

The tiny Leica Macro Elmar 90mm 4.0 gives incredible results on the Sony A7 range of cameras. Erwin Puts recons that it is one of Leicas finest lenses.

The VC 65mm f/2 APO is indeed an excellent lens. If I were shooting strictly macro I would wait for the recently released VC 110 f/2.5 though for it's 1:1 magnification ratio.

If the upcoming Voigtlander 110 mm macro is anything like its old 125 mm macro, it should be a lens to cherish. That old-timer 125 f/2.5 is my favorite lens - not least for its long focus throw, an advantage of manual-focus lenses.

I use the 125mm CV with an adapter, could not imagine any better lens.  Macro does not really work for me with hand held, so the adapter is no biggie, and the camera will select the f stops just fine.  The lens I have does not have manual f stop.

Sony's own FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS is superb: stunning optical quality at all apertures and all distances; great bokeh; really good AF on the A7 II/III series cameras; 1:1 magnification; superb for portraits; built in IS, which on top of the A7r II cameras' own IS provides remarkable levels of IS for such a chunky lens; built like a tank.
