Title: Standard Previews are disappearing
Post by: tonysiciliano1 on August 20, 2018, 12:15:12 pm
I have the latest version of LR Classic on my Mac Pro 2013, also latest OS. The catalogue and associated files are all in the same folder on this boot drive, my photos are on an external drive connected by USB 3.0. My problem is this: I have made Standard sized previews of all of my 60,000 photos and several times in the last few months they seem to have disappeared, and I have to ask LR to re make them, which takes many hours. I have not moved or renamed the LR catalogue. Any thoughts about what might be going on?

You could experiment with the Automatically discard 1:1 previews after x days setting in Catalog Settings/file handling.  I know your problem is with standard pre-views and my suggestion refers to 1:1 pre-views but you never know.

Thanks for the suggestion. I already have "Never" chosen for 1:1 Previews, although I don't have any....

AND those are not Standard Previews.
Tony, do a search for ....Previews.lrdata. More than one, what's the date created/modified? That's where the previews reside.
What makes you say they have disappeared?

I checked the lr.data file size after I last created Standard Previews for all my photos (using Time Machine) and it was a bit over 80 GB. This morning, after I tried opening a few photos to Standard size and there was a few seconds delay, as if there was no preexisting Standard Preview, I checked and the same lr.data file was only 8 GB. So, for some reason most of the previews have disappeared. Again, I have not moved or renamed the photo folder where all of my photos are kept.

Odd! And there's only one such file everywhere you look? Of course you can go back in TM and get those back, that's probably the best start. I can't understand what would reduce that file by itself. Backup (as you're doing), that's the best thing I can suggest for the time being. Now regenerating all the previews is doable albeit time consuming but can be done unattended. The back up is quick and easy.
