Looks like the door is ready to be unhinged.
more detail crunchiness in the wood distracts from the pull since it has it's own lesser amount. or is this about the wood texture ?

Both, I thought. Toning down the texture in the wood to emphasise the handle is an interesting idea, though.

It was on an old barn, next to the door in this shot (http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=126050.msg1058237).

I would be tempted to do some serious processing to bring out the "pull" more.
I think this has good possibilities (even without the colours of your "door.")

Yep, lots of potential but it's too flat.  Needs depth on the handle (contrast?).
