Title: Camera and lens profiles: time for Adobe to rethink packaging
Post by: dreed on June 21, 2018, 03:50:42 am
I just downloaded the latest ACR update and at 430MB, it is the largest yet.

Complete with this download is a set of camera and lens profiles for the two cameras I have, phone and a gazillion other cameras and phones.

If I install Lightroom, it has its own complete set of all the same profiles.

Over time this just keeps growing and I have no control over it.

If anyone from Adobe is reading, I'd like to encourage them to consider the following:
* Find a way for all of the Adobe apps to share the same set of camera and lens profiles that I've got installed
* Find a way for me to select which ones I do and don't install, independent of Lightroom/ACR

"Oh, but it's not that big"

The 430MB download almost doubles in size on disk. I've probably got over 500MB of installed files that I'll never use because I don't (and will never have) the matching device(s). The problem as it is is O(M*N). When a new camera is added, a whole new set of lens profiles are added. Rinse and repeat for each vendor.

"But that's only a fraction of a 256GB SSD"

After many years of operation and lots of other apps being used, a 128GB or 256GB SSD can easily end up with less than a GB left, leaving the owner to wonder "Where the f*** disk all my disk space go?!?!?!"

At least on my Mac, all the profiles LR and ACR use share the same folder/directory, no duplication.

Not the case in Windows 10,  for instance the lens profiles sit in C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles, C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles and C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic CC\Resources\LensProfiles

Good to know (and why I don't do Windows  ;D )
As such, there may be some technical reason why Adobe needs to do what they do as they attempt to keep such cross platform functionality in parity.
Clearly it works just fine on the Mac without duplication. It is also useful to report what OS one uses prior to posting about such 'issues'.

Back when I used & worked with Windows it was typical for different apps from the same vendor to store config data in unique per-app subdirectories despite the apps' ability to use a common config subdirectory if you, the end user, overrode the default setup. I'll bet this is what's going on here. Legacy behavior that Adobe as of yet hasn't been arsed to change. At one time it was actually necessary, but that time passed long ago.

As far as I am aware Lightroom and Camera Raw store the Adobe created camera profiles and the Lenses profiles in one location and the user/third party profiles in their own location.

So there are two separate locations for each of the Camera Raw profiles and the Lens profiles, one for the Adobe Created profiles and one for the user/third party profiles

On my Windows 7 system:

4.8 MB   C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\ (User Lens & Camera Profiles)
789 MB  C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\ (Lens & Camera Profiles)
803 MB  C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic CC\Resources\ (Lens & Camera Profiles)

The Adobe provided lens and camera profiles are duplicated on Windows 7 and I suspect Windows 10 as well. That's about 800 MB of duplicated files.
