Hey,
Has anyone got any experience with adhesive backed photo paper? I'll looking for a satin or lustre with pressure sensitive adhesive on the back. Does anyone know any companies that have this, preferably in the EU/UK?
Thanks,
-
How strong an adhesive do you need and in what paper sizes? I don't know what the availability is in the UK but Breathing Color sells a product called Photo Peel Adhesive Vinyl that might meet your needs. Image quality is pretty good but any texture in the surface you are adhering too will show through the vinyl. And there are removable 4x6" papers based on the Post-It adhesive that are available but I've never used them. I haven't seen any permanent adhesive high quality papers which is surprising since you would think that would be a popular product. I hope somebody else can contribute a suggestion for that.

Thanks for the reply. I'm look for a permanent adhesive on 17 or 24 inch rolls. I was hoping to find photo paper instead of vinyl but I'll check out your suggestion thanks.

Not an answer to your actual question but another option that may be worth considering is 3M Photo Mount spray adhesive (the one in the red can). Strong, instant bond and permanent.
I've used it successfully on many types of photo paper, gloss, satin, matt and fine art.

Inkpress makes a luster RC paper with an adhesive: http://www.inkpresspaper.com/profiles.asp?PaperID=55
but I don't know if it's available in the UK or not.
There's always Phototex and its various clones including one sold by Innova Art in the UK: https://www.innovaart.com/innova-art-products/youtac-textile-aqueous-compatible/
but it's not a "paper" per say but more of a woven cloth.

What substrate are you going to me mounting to?
Both gator board and foam board come with adhesive attached, much easier in my opinion.

I've had bad experiences with the print buckling after a while especially if near any heat.

I came across the Inkpress one before but couldn't source it in the EU/UK

Yeah I reckon you're right. I'm looking to mount to Gator board or Pvc foamboard/Foamex but I can't seem to find suppliers with self adhesive version in EU/UK either.

I use this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/46514-REG/Scotch_56816_Mounting_Adhesive_Roll.html
which works well for small and medium size photos. But again finding it in the UK may be a challenge.

I have bought a secondhand Drytac Jetmounter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gjazc_L0no&list=PLB930A6BF6A76B3D0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gjazc_L0no&list=PLB930A6BF6A76B3D0)
A very versatile machine with a lot of options.

Do a search for self adhesive foamboard in the Internet and you should find some suppliers.

For years I trawled eBay, looking for a used dry mount press so I could mount prints on gator. A friend bought a used roller laminator, tried some adhesive backed gator and I was hooked. So much easier than anything else. Excellent results.

I don't understand why that's so hard to find. Hotpress was a UK company now owned by Drytac Ltd., Neschen is in Germany etc. Look around, they're there.

Thanks for the help but unfortunately none of those sell Self Adhesive Gatorboard. A few sell cut sizes of gatorboard and the rest self adhesive foamcore board.

Ah brilliant, do you know the name of the paper, I can't seem to find it on their website. Thanks

you dont have to buy self adhesive boards, buy normal boards and a roll of mount film, you can run it onto the board using you laminator
the plus side to this is you dont have to use cheap paper (which generally self adhesive stuff is) its not generally for better quality photography
self adhesive foam board i buy in 8*4ft sheets in 5mm and buy in boxes of 20 sheets at a time
foamex i buy 8*4 sheets and apply my own mount film to them

Based on my own bad experience with mounting prints on Foamcore board I would strongly recommend not using 3M's photo mount adhesive. My prints started to detach themselves from the board after only a short time.
After consulting with 3M it appears that the Foamcore board gives off a chemical which reacts with the adhesive causing it to degrade. This process is enhanced by heat and humidity.
Instead 3M recommended using their carpet adhesive which comes in a similar spray-can to the photo mount.

No one should be using Foamcore anyway as it always warps. Gatorboard is preferred as it doesn't warp.
Interesting info about the carpet adhesive though, thanks.
