Title: Sony a7R III or α9 for weddings?
Post by: haring on March 22, 2018, 06:18:43 pm
Is there any wedding photographers here who use Sony a7R III or α9 for weddings? Any feedback? Is AF fast and accurate with NO native lenses? IS AF fast with Canon or Nikon lenses?

Thanks!

Since a back up is mandatory anyway, why not get both?

Cheers,
Bernard

I just wanted to find out whether non native, non Sony lenses with converters work with Saony cameras where these cameras provides usable fast AF in low light situation.

Does it make sense? Thanks!

Reports from folks using EF lenses on Sony cameras are mixed. Sigma lenses used with Sigma's own AF adapter apparently work quite well. I've seen & heard the whole gamut of takes on using Canon's own lenses with either the Sigma or Metabones adapters: everything from "works great!" to "totally useless!" I'd rent a body & adapter and try it out for myself.

I have the a7R3 and use many Canon lenses on it; up to the 600 v2 +2TC, and they generally work pretty well.  I've found the Sigma adapter MC-11 is a bit more responsive than the Metabones.  There are some things that won't work with non native lenses; eye and face detection may not function.  Best to try it out first.

Hi,

Metabones Smart Adapter IV works well with Sony A7rII in green mode, using 16-35/4 and 24-105/4L. I would use native lenses for critical work, though.

I had the opportunity to test A7rII, when it was released, with a Canon 100-400/4.5-5.6L. AF worked so,so up to 200 mm and not at all beyond that.

My first sample of the Metabones lost contact with the camera frequently. Number two is quite reliable.

Best regards
Erik

I can't think of a shooting situation where a reliable camera is more important. Working with a well tested system and a backup system ready at hand is how you distinguish yourself from the amateurs. Using a non-native lens is never 100% reliable in my experience.

I could not agree more!
Yes, the Sony A9 or the A7RIII are both great bodies, however you sacrifice several key advantages with non-native lenses here!
And yes, none of the adapters are 100% reliable...

Yes, I do use Sony bodies and Canon lenses together frequently, but never for high pressure, one opportunity only shooting.

If you do want to use those bodies then get a couple of good Sony lenses to go with them...
