Title: Does Epson 2880 put too much ink on HPR?
Post by: MariC on March 21, 2018, 06:48:14 pm
I just finished testing Hahnemuhle Photo Rag with 1440 and 2880 on an Epson 7900 and seemed to have noticed some slight improvements (both in resolution and gradations) with 2880 even though the manufacturer advises on their profiles to use 1440 (this also seems to be the preferred settings for matte papers in general, from what I've heard).

I know that at 2880 the printer adds 5% to 8% (hearsay, rough figures...) more ink, and that some matte papers can show some mottling in the pure blacks when too much ink is used. With the limited tests that I have performed I have noticed no issue, however was wondering if anyone has had more extensive experience using this specific paper with 2880, and can advise for or against using it. Thanks

Also, short of a printer linearization (which I believe cannot be done without a rip on Epson) do you usually carry out any kind of "ink density" optimization before doing a profile on well know papers? "color density" (in the printer driver) changes all inks at ones and I always thought It would be wise to leave it alone, but may be I'm wrong... On HPR, for now I'm using the manufacturer recommended settings "Velvet Fine Art" with "1440" and Matte Black, but I'm staring to wonder if that can be improved upon, hence the 2880 test and ensuing doubts...

Thanks
