Title: Looking at the TS-E135mm F4L Macro
Post by: keithcooper on March 07, 2018, 12:13:48 pm
Canon UK kindly lent me one of these and I've written up a lengthy review that tries to look a bit more at the how and the why of using such a lens as well as the usual specs/pics.

Hope it's of some interest.

The 135mm goes back on Friday, but I should get the 50mm next week, which is likely to add another £2200 lens to my wishlist ;-)

Apologies in advance to true LF camera movement experts, but it's partly aimed at the 'what is tilt/shift' audience...

Thanks Keith. I'm a bit disappointed Canon didn't keep the 45mm focal length in the new version but the optical upgrade should be worth it.

Thank you for the review.  I was a bit disappointed in the 1:2 maximum reproduction ratio.  Did you, by chance, test this with the Canon 1.4x and 2x to get closer to a 1:1 repro ratio?

Sorry - I don't own either of them

You can get close to 1:1 with a bit more extension tube than I used, however getting close to 1:1 rapidly diminishes the amount of tilt available (see the example from using the +3 close-up lens)

I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that the Canon 500D close-up lens is usable (more so than the cheapo one I had laying around here - which was dismal)

i've had good results using the 500D on my old 90 TS, also the 1.4x - not the 2x

I had a chance today to take a few test shots with my recently acquired Canon 135mm TS-E in combination with Canon extension tubes and the Canon 1.4x III TC. I used a portion of a ruler as a target, and attempted to keep the left edge of the frame lined up with the 100mm mark on the ruler. I've attached a few of the resulting images in the hope that they might help answer questions about 1:1 reproduction. The lens was set at its closest focusing distance and the camera was moved on a focus rail to achieve focus.

Wow, looks like you got a bit past 1:1 :)
