Title: WHY IS MY PRINT BLACK!?
Post by: Mike Guilbault on February 05, 2018, 12:41:04 pm
Why on earth would my print be coming out pure BLACK!? It's appearing ok in the print dialogue (Latest LR CC Classic), but on print out, nothing but black. Using an Epson 9900, printing on canvas. I did a 'test strip' and everything was fine. When I print the full image - it's black!

LOL... that about sums up how I feel at the moment. The odd thing is, when I try to print out of LR, it comes out all black. However, if I print the same image from Capture One, the blues come out purple, but everything else is fine. This one totally baffles me.

sorry, Mike.  Totally baffled as well.  Never seen anything like it.

Thanks anyway Wayne. I'm going to try printing directly from PS tomorrow.

What does the print preview look like?

Have you tried and reinstalling the driver?

The print preview looks fine ( see attached screen shot), but no, I haven’t tried reinstalling the driver because other prints have been fine. But it’s worth a shot.

I assume you mean your original, which is from Lr.  I mean a preview from the driver.  If that's good, then Lr is providing good data and the driver is rasterising it just fine.  If it's bad, then Lr isn't giving good data.

Complete wild guesses.
Are you trying to print a PSD file?
Are you trying to print a TIF file that is not flattened?
If you have flattened it did you remove any Alpha channels, paths, everything other than RGB, r, g, B,  in the Channels panel?
Are you using a Mac? If so what do you see when you Ctl-click and Open with Preview app? What happens when you print then?

I do not have a clue either, but just to add in the hope that something may help.

Assuming that it is just a LR issue have you tried trashing preferences?  Or just moving your Preferences file to another location so that it can be restored if there is no change.
To Delete:  Before starting LR hold down Alt and Shift (Windows) / Opt and Shift (Mac)
I know that it does sound like a long shot as other printing including test strips appear to work but...

Have you tried to print any other images at that particular size 70" x 40"?

Just one more wild suggestion.  I've read this thread thoroughly and have seen no mention of Photoshop.  Have you tried printing this file from PS?

File size crash?
Although when mine does that it does not print and runs off and cuts the entire white canvas off the roll.
You have all but a 2GB file. My Mac Pro/Lightroom does not like anything much over 1 GB.
Did you try sending to Lightroom at 180? Also printing at 180 without the Lightroom uprez.
Just a thought.

Almost every file I have is 2-3 GB, and never a  problem to print from LR.

Bet if you keep printing, the print will eventually turn all white...  :D

I'm printing a psd file with one graphic layer. I'll try flattening it.

Ok... FINALLY got my print. I flattened the file and output at 8bit rather than 16bit and printed through PhotoShop. Even flattened though, it printed my blues purple through Capture One, and still black through LR.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Still don't know WHY... but I can move on for now.

cheers!

Did you go through all the other questions I asked (like alpha channels)?
To me at least PSD is never an output format.
