Title: Fuji GFX 50S third party lenses
Post by: felix5616 on January 23, 2018, 12:08:56 pm
I have a fuji GFX 50S and have be using a Pentax 645 120mm macro lens with nice results. How can I find out which 35mm lenses(Sigma ART 135mm /1.8) will cover the sensor? Any published or online list of image circles for 35mm lenses?

The Zeiss 135/2 Apo Sonnar ZF.2 covers pretty well:

I haven't tested the Sigma 135/1.8.

The Otus 55 and 85 don't cover well enough to use the full 4:3 aspect ratio, IMO. 4:5 is marginally doable. 1:1 works.

Sigma Art 35, 50, 85, 135
Canon 100f2.8 Macro L, 200f2 L
cover 33x44
35 and 50 a bit soft in the corners, all others very good to excellent

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 L works perfect on the GFX.
TS-E 24mm L II and TS-E 17mm L are great too (unshifted and even with several mm of shift). But shift is more limited compared to full frame cameras (quality declines in towards the corners).
The new TS-E 90mm L can use full shift on the GFX with extremly sharp corners and no vignetting (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4245696).

Canon EF 135mm f/2L - Excellent, with minimal vignetting that can be easily corrected.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS - Excellent, with minimal vignetting that can be easily corrected. 1:1 macro!
Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II - Significant vignetting, only square crop is usable.
Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L - The built-in lens shade ruins it for the 11-14mm range. Starting from 15mm the image is very usable, with minimal vignetting that can be easily corrected.

Note these were tested on X1D with a Kipon EF-XCD adapter, but results should be the same with the GFX since they have the same sensor size.

the new TS-E 50mm and the TS-E135mm also work perfectly, I have written a test in the german "digit!" magazine 01/2018 for the full range of all 5 TS-E lenses and was able to test them for 4 Weeks.

The Pentax 645 A 35/3.5 lens should do it, I think. The it is a film era lens that I use on my 645D and film 645 and it's a favorite.

Here's how you can find out which 35mm lenses will cover the GFX:

- Prime lenses above 50mm and f/2 or faster (50mm, 58mm, 75mm, 85mm, 90mm, etc)
- Zoom lenses at their long ranges (24-70mm @ 40-70mm, for example)
- All T/S or PC or shift lenses made for 35mm systems
- Many large aperture wide angle primes will cover, although the peripheral bokeh is smaller/swirly/warped
- Many fast macros made for 35mm systems will cover, some will have vignette (a 180/3.5 Sigma APO macro will have vignette, but a faster 150/2.8 or 180/2.8 APO macro will cover)
- Simple design lenses (projections, vintage, enlarging) will cover (petzvals, triplets, tessar/xenars, etc) because simple lenses (with less elements) have larger coverage
- Teleconverters will increase the image circle, hence many lenses that are teleconverter (or with Laowa's Magic Converter/Shift Adapter) will cover 44x33mm

I will have future articles regarding this on my blog, but now you can check out some of the adapted lenses I've used on the GFX:
