Title: Canon error 30: help!
Post by: Jeremy Roussak on January 20, 2018, 01:28:01 pm
I've just switched on my Canon 5DII for the first time in a couple of years, to find that any attempt to take a photo results in "Shooting not possible: error 30" being displayed. Following the advice to switch it off and on again, or to reinstall the battery, doesn't make any difference. I suspect the shutter is jammed.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Jeremy

Ouch! Sorry to hear that, Jeremy.

What have you been photographing with recently if not the 5D2?

My 5D2 always worked flawlessly, but when I got tired of changing lenses all the time I traded it in for a Sony RX10, and now the RX10iii, which has a nice Zeiss lens that zooms from 24 to 600 mm (full-frame equivalent).

The only thing I can think of that might help is to try spraying some electronic contact cleaner into the empty battery compartment and on the electronic contacts around the lens mount and let it dry to see if the contacts got dirty

If that doesn't help, I'd take or ship it to Canon for repairs.

Good luck!

-Eric

I have some interest in this question because I still work with 5DII.
I made a Yahoo search and found this old discussion (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=673467)
There is some advices in post #6

The problem maybe have something to do with live view shooting, I think it's better to start there. The newest firmware is never a bad idea.

Btw the post #12 shows me why I'm keeping in these civilized forums like LULA

Try the following, several times if necessary.

Look in the camera with the lens removed, is the mirror in the normal position and not askew or fallen off?  (A common problem with older 5D2's especially in humid climates).  If the mirror is attached, put the camera in bulb mode and while looking into the lens mount without a lens trigger the shutter and watch and then release the shutter - did everything go OK or was there anything weird with the shutter? If all is OK, go to the next paragraph..

Put a fully charged battery in the camera, turn the camera on and wait for a few seconds.  Leaving the camera on, remove the battery, wait for 10 seconds, reinstall the battery.  Turn the camera off, then on.  Repeat if necessary.  If after 4 tries this does not work, it is likely that the shutter mechanism has failed.

For my pleasure I tried some other searches.
I asked Google: "Why I'm getting error 30 in my Canon 5D mk II" and found a heavier answer:Hit it! (https://www.flickr.com/groups/canon_7d_digital_slr/discuss/72157627532873099/) and many more hits. Try this kind of search, and try also other engines than Google.
Canon don't tell much about the error 30 (http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/infobank/camera_settings/eos_error_codes_and_messages.do)
But from other sources we can find it has something to do with the shutter, maybe it's stuck, or maybe there's a software issue.

Thanks for the tips. I fear the shutter is jammed. The mirror looks well-aligned. If I press the shutter release in bulb mode, or if I try manual sensor cleaning, the mirror rises for a second or two, then falls back; and while it's up, I can see the shutter blades haven't moved. The suggestion of turning it off and on again (reminiscent of an excellent TV comedy called The IT Crowd) or removing and reinserting the battery is, sadly but obviously, futile; and hitting the camera (as hard as I dare, anyway) hasn't worked.

Moral: don't leave a camera unused for two years. Back to Canon it will go, and I'll have to hire something else as a backup for a forthcoming trip.

Eric, I have been using a 5Ds.

So, in the meantime, why not pick up another 5Ds as backup, using the proceeds from the sales of all your Iceland prints to pay for it.   ;D

As I feared, this error, if it can't be cleared by dumping the batteries is almost always a failed shutter.
