Title: Moving ipf8400 printer
Post by: Thenolands on December 22, 2017, 10:50:29 am
I am about to have to move my ipf8400 to my new home and am going to try a level 1 move (no ink wasted). Of course canon recommends against this but I have read other people having no issues. My question is where is ink most likely to leak from and thus where should I try to have extra paper towels or absorbent material to make sure it doesn’t leak on to any electronics of printer. I am going to keep it as level as possible during move and only traveling a few miles via truck. I am thinking the maintenance tank is the main issue if it has liquid ink that has not been completely absorbed by the pads contained in it. Anywhere else I should focus?

I wouldn't try it unless it can be kept completely flat - the maintenance tank is one potential issue, but the bigger problem is that Canon printers use sub-tanks in between the tanks and the head. It's what allows them to drain cartridges completely, and avoid Epson's complex pressurized ink system, but it's also the source of leaks. I saw one of these ruined by a Level 2 move that should have been a Level 3 (significant stairs). Unless you have wide enough doors at both ends, and no real stairs (depending on what two or three entrance stairs look like, you may be able to keep it flat), you need to do a Level 2 or even a Level 3...

Thanks Dan.

Moving from 1 story to a 1 story so we should be good keeping it flat. If you were going to try it would you take any additional precautions? Should I remove the maintenance tank for the move? Place absorbent material anywhere just in case?

How much ink would a level 2 move waste? I am still using the original 330ml tanks that come with printer and have probably used less than half of that in each tank.

Got the move done and kept it level throughout. No ink leaked and everything looks good. After I plugged it back in the printer asked “has printer been reinstalled?” I selected ‘yes’ and then it goes into a mode where it says “replenishing ink please wait” it does this for a few minutes and then goes into nozzle check mode and then throws an error saying matte gray is empty. I cannot remember how full or empty it was prior to the move but I just want to make sure if I go and replace this cartridge the printer is not going to dump/waste any additional colors (not sure it wasted the gray but I would hate for the gray to simply be the first color it started with and to wasted all the other ink). I did a level 1 move so not sure why it had to “replenish” the ink at all. This is the first ink I have run out of and it seems odd that it used the most matte gray of anything. We print mostly color prints on luster.

Does any of this seeem odd to anyone or should I just replace the matte gray and let it continue to do its thing?

What did you finally do and how did the move come  out?
I have to move my 8400 from one room to another- mostly a roll with one step.
Trying to learn from others
Thanks

You will be fine. If you have to take off stand do that and just keep it level as u go up one step. I wouldn’t even put it into level one for such a short trip. We took the printer out of a standard bedroom window and into the bed of a pickup laying on a foam mattress topper. Drove 4 miles and brout it into new house which is all on one level. Just keep it level and no problems.

My only concern is the ink issue and whether or not putting it into a level one move wastes ink. I’m not sure what the printer is actually doing when you select a level 1 move
