Welcome. Michael!!!l

Video is indeed a growing aspect of photography whether it's done in cameras or taken with drones.

That's great news! Let me add my hearty Welcome Aboard to Michael!
It has been clear for some time that LuLa needed to try to clone Chris, and Michael seems like an excellent alternative.

Welcome, Michael -

But Kevin, I gotta say, the more that LL becomes just another youtube channel, the less I am interested.  The flip side of "how popular youtube is means LL has to play more" is "youtube is already overwhelmed with content".

I dunno, for me the jury is still out.  And I do have one other comment: Kevin, a lot of the recent video content since Founding Michael passed away is, not to put too fine a point on it, you talking. This is somewhat understandable, you have been carrying the whole thing. I know you like to talk, and you are good at it, but please, less of you and more of the others who are the ostensible subjects of the videos. I mean this constructively, and IMHO this is part of how LL will need to up the production values if you are going to succeed in video world.

The bottom line for me is that I am interested in still images.  In prints. In still cameras.  I like to read thoughtful articles, with tests and analyses and charts.

I hope LL does not lose that focus.

Bruce, thanks for the comments but have you seen the most recent videos?  I think I have a pretty good handle on the industry as it is and the way audiences are moving.  I have spent a lot of time in many places worldwide talking not only to photographers but other content creators.  I think the plan we have in motion is sound and the right one.  We won't lose track of what LuLa is all about, but we will also stay abreast of the time by offering the best of both video and written content.

We'll learn a lot as we move forward.  For now, we still have lots more of the Leica story and the Shooting With The Master series. Plus we are working on a number of new projects.

Kevin, thanks for your quick response.  I hope it is clear that I am commenting because I care about LuLu.

Yes, I have been watching the Leica videos.  What I have seen so far in the first three is you talking to three different people about Leica's culture.  I haven't learned anything technical about any of their products, or why people think they are so exceptional as to be worth the exceptional prices.  Charts? Graphs? Cross sections? I am open to learning that, but so far don't understand.

I would happily watch someone do the black paint on a few lenses, for example, with some discussion about the lenses.  Instead it has been about how long they have been doing it, with a brief flash.  In other words, still about the culture.

In the case of the new CL camera, I am really curious how you download images without cable connections.  My experience with wifi downloading, both Fuji and Canon current products, is that it is too slow for more than a few images.  The camera can have the fastest wifi link in the world, but the rest depends on the user's router and service.  The other option seems to be to remove the card and go back to sneakernet.  I asked this question on a list of Q&As that B&H has, and basically got the sneakernet answer.  Meanwhile, Apple is busily removing card readers and providing only cable connections for hardware.  So there's an example of something I would like to see in a Leica video, that question and a discussion.  Or more about why/how they think simpler lenses are better than, say, the Sigma ART approach of lots of groups inside to correct everything.

That sort of stuff is what I am thinking of, just as examples.

Cheers,
Bruce Bender

I think Kevin is doing a great job. I don't think it is fair to compare lula today with lula in the past because the entire industry has leveled out.

Not quite sure what you mean by "the entire industry has leveled out".

But for an example of what I am talking about, in contrast to talking head videos, see this.  (In fairness, I will mention that DP Review has been posting a lot of talking head videos themselves.)

Written info.  Nice still photos that show details and process.  Like all written info, go at your own pace.  Stills MUCH more informative than split-second video glimpses.  I find it much more interesting and useful for specialized photo expertise, while the world is already flooded with youtube videos. That's all.
