Appearing abruptly, LR now places a "Close" radio button in the center of my iMac screen, as shown in the attached. The Close button appears to do nothing when clicked, is not movable, and is present in every LR window, as well as in windows of every app that' open. Closing LR dismisses the button.
A Preference reset might get rid of this, but it seems odd.

That's a new one for me!
The only thing I can suggest is that it might be the Image Overlay feature's Layout Image (which is intended for tethered shooting into a magazine cover or other layout). In Library's Loupe view or in Develop, take a look at the menu View > Loupe Overlay and see if Layout Image is enabled.

Never seen it or heard of it, but it has the hint of a GPU problem. Find and disable GPU processing in LR and see if it goes away.

Thank you both. Results:
1) Closing & reopening catalog: No difference
2) Disabling GPU: No difference
3) Computer reboot: Solved. "Close" button disappears.
Never needed to test the impact of deleting LR prefs.
Many thanks,

Ditto, not showing up on this end.

It seems odd for sure. Does the “close” button look like it might be from another app rather than Lr?

Two products on my Mac repeatedly create phantom UI like your "close" button that persist as an overlay as I switch between applications. Do you have any other applications open?

The Close button appeared to be a product of LR in that the button would come and go as LR was open and closed. The button would always appear on top, as it always appeared on what ever other app window open, which included Safari, Disk Utility and SuperDuper.
