Up before dawn to try and use the forecast mist to get minimalist tree shots. Like mist the world over it was very patchy with a spectacular sunrise in 1 location and totally devoid of colour in another just a few miles away. This is the best that I got. Ken

Both version work.
But I prefer the first one because of the color warmth and gradient.

Well call me 'Harry Opposite', but I prefer the composition of the second one, although both images are beautiful there is no doubt in that, but it is the second one that would end up hanging on my wall I think :)

#2 for me as well. I like the juxtaposition of the 2 trees. The smaller, more distant one looks like it is trying to escape the scene off to the left. That balances the open space to the right. For me that creates a pleasing tension and more dynamic cropping.

They are both beautiful.
Just looking at the thumbnails, I prefer the second, compositionally.
But when I enlarge them, I find I really like seeing both of the small trees t the left.

The colours of the first are more appealing, but I prefer the composition of the second.

It was an odd morning with the colour getting bluer as the morning went on contrary to normal practice. I think that their is a touch of magenta in the first image although I have tried to remove it. Ken

i, also, like the 2nd better. more tension in there. cannot judge colors on the thing i‘m viewing right now.

Thanks everyone. Another go at both. I removed the sun from one of them to simplify the composition and have warmed up the other as requested. I don't know whether the warming makes it any better but I still like it. Comments? Ken

For me, both 2nd versions are improvements. Very well done. Couldn't decide between those two, actually. I'm glad I don't have to.

Tough shots to work with. Not sure how to explain it, but I can't get my arms around what I would do if I were processing them. I'd probably hold the foreground a little cooler and warm the sky (as you've done in the later posts). I'd also consider looking into adding some clarity/depth by trying to bring out the trees deep in the fog. The clouds in the sky make the shot compelling, but somehow the color balance of the blue sky is slightly lack luster. This typically occurs when an entire photo is color adjusted - perhaps see if you can isolate the blue in the sky and touch down the luminosity to increase the depth of the blue?
Anyway, great images. Nothing really needed in the end.

I think I prefer the last version, the last image posted. The singular tree at left is more balanced, more focused when it's not complicated by the presence of the others even further left. I love the palette.

Murphy I must be getting too subtle their are 3 different colour balances in the image. The foreground is warmer than the rest of the image and the sky at the top left is much cooler than the rest of the sky. Ken

For my eye #2 is the preferred composition.
The second compositions (also the first) have an unnatural corner burn down, IMO. The latter being way too dark. I think if you print these you will get a better feel for what and which works.

Dongba the "unnatural" corner burn down is the the land falling towards you making this part in shadow and therefore darker. Are you viewing this on a small display? Ken

The second is certainly improved by the increased warmth, although you have lost something around the base of the tree. I'm afraid that in my view your reprocessing - particularly the removal of the sun - has ruined the first.

For me the original #1 was the best, however the reworked #2 is right up there...
