Title: Moody Talisker Bay, Isle of Skye
Post by: Vieri Bottazzini on November 08, 2017, 10:25:54 am
Moody Talisker Bay, on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, after sunset. Taken during one of my Workshops on Skye last spring with the Leica S (Typ 007), the Leica 35mm Summarit-S and Formatt-Hitech Firecrest filters.

Love it!  The super flat horizon and reflections are mesmerizing.

I struggle with this one, for a couple of reasons:

1. The diagonal of the foreground rocks leads to the left, off-frame.

2. The background cliffs position leaves a lot of emptiness on the right.

The net result for me is an unbalanced composition. I will need to get back to it in a few days and see if these first impressions  remain.

Thank you very much indeed! :)

Hello Paulo,

thank you for your detailed comment. To me:

1. The diagonal + bottom left curve made by the rocks in foreground rocks lead to the stack;

2. The idea behind the composition is full-left / empty-right, organised diagonally; in my mind, they balance just nicely, but of course I appreciated it that you might feel differently about it :)

If you have the chance, I am curious to hear what time did for you regarding the image (if anything). Best regards,

Vieri

Dear Vieri,

thanks for your further thoughts and planning that went into the image. I learn a lot from this type of dialogue. To me, what you say makes sense; I was trying to visualize it, and reached the conclusion that perhaps the diagonal is too strong; a better framing (to me, of course) would be to make the image square format: it would still keep the dynamic of the diagonal, while balancing the elements a bit better.

I like it just the way it is, especially with the water swirling around the central foreground rock, which anchors the image for me.

Dear Paulo,

it's my pleasure, I am glad that my explanations made sense to you - even though, in the end, when approaching an artwork (and I consider the kind of photography that I do as such, as an interpretation, not as a descriptive representation of reality) we see what we see with our own eyes, process what we see according to our database of experiences and reach our own conclusions, which of course (and luckily!) differ from person to person :)

I like it just the way it is, especially with the water swirling around the central foreground rock, which anchors the image for me.

Eric

Thank you very much Eric, I am glad that you enjoyed and "read" the image as I meant it :)

Best regards,

Vieri

I respect your comment on the "emptiness", but I love that in a photo.  It must be a matter of taste.

It's not a place I have been to often, but I like it very much. I like your take on this and the simplicity of the composition.

Thank you for your comment, I am glad you enjoyed the composition :) I agree, it is a matter of taste, and as always when you make an artistic choice (such as choosing a composition vs a different one) you are bound to make someone happy, someone else less happy - it's the beauty of photography :D

Thank you very much Hans, glad you enjoyed it :) Me, I go to Skye very often, this year 4 times already (for Workshops) and I never tire of it :)

Best regards,

Vieri
